Salute to all our Veterans. Especially those from WWII, I

May 27, 2021, 6:42 PM

know your numbers are rapidly dwindling now.

Every time I hear about one of these "Honor Flights" going back to places like the Normandy Beaches, it makes me very solemn. I cannot imagine what goes through the minds of those brave old men, who were very scared but brave young men at the time. Every time you see a video of one of these trips, the guys are in tears all these years later. Some H-E-L-L-S never fade away. I don't even know if I could stand to make that trip if I were in their shoes.

ALL our Veterans have my highest possible respect. I know your remembrances of Memorial Day will be vastly different from those who have never served, but my wish for you is that you will find some happy memories on that day as well. SALUTE.

Amen ! Memorial Day should be a day when we do something for our active or inactive military personnel by making sure they enjoy Monday Let them know that we are grateful for the sacrifices they have made so that We have the freedom to cook out, celebrate and have fun with our families because we are a free nation.

Maybe some can go online and donate to one of the programs that help retired or injured Vet’s who can no longer serve. There are many things we can do. Have our kids or people from the neighborhood go over and wash a car for someone who is active in the military or some who is inactive but served in the military. Take them a meal over or have a block party honoring their service. There are so many things we can do on Memorial Day and through out the year to honor our Military personnel.

Most of all let them know how much we appreciate the sacrifice and service and we will always be thankful for our Military. May God Bless you each one of you every day. Thank you for your service and for the sacrifices you made for this great country. ????????????????????????

You do know Memorial Day is to honor those who didn't come back - or came back wrapped in a flag. Veterans day is to honor living Vets while Armed Forces day is to honor those currently serving.

I am sure he does..but we can honor them all, all the time.***

You are correct sir. Most don’t have any idea what the different holidays mean. I have never understood the stupidity of those who guzzle beer, cook out, run to the beach and shoot fireworks on Memorial Day. Guess they are too dumb to know they are celebrating the deaths of hundreds of thousands of American servicemen. Oh well, any excuse to get drunk and party.

Thank you. (LCDR, Navy)

But, we need to understand that Memorial Day is not about folks like me. We have a day to be honored - Veterans Day.

Memorial Day is a day to honor those who never returned home.

Slight difference, for sure. But, to many of us veterans, we feel guilty when folks get the two days confused or just think of them as interchangeable. It, in a way, lessens the honor and respect that should be reserved for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country.

Thank you, BretFsu. - Exactly. My dad landed on Omaha Beach on June 22, albeit 2 weeks after D-Day, and it was his 30th birthday. He was in Patton's 3rd Army and went through Normandy, Austria and north to the battle of "The Bulge" to relive Bastogne. He spent 9-10 months in Europe in battle every single day. He told me (he didn't speak much about that experience, of course) that he saw each of his 6 best friends killed in battle, and came home asking God, "why me, Lord?", every night of his life ever since, praying for them every night until he died. I was a young child and our flag pole was right outside my bedroom window, and at 6-oclock in the morning on Memorial Day my dad would come in and place our flag outside the window and ask me to help him get it mounted properly.... Memorial Day used to be May 30, my own birthday, and I kinda' wish it still was.

God Bless all who gave their lives in any conflict our Great Nation has ever been involved in. And God Bless those who serve today, and always.

Go all tigers!!!

Great post Spud. On Memorial Day weekend our son was shot in the head while in Afghanistan on active duty. Survived miraculously. I know we honor those who died defending this nation, but I’ll add to it gratitude for not only his survival, but also those brave men who risked their lives to fly him safely under fire to a field hospital. I say enjoy your day at the beach, backyard, or wherever, just remember with deep gratitude those who kept your freedoms free.
