Wish me Luck, and "I'd like to thank all the little people."

Apr 24, 2022, 8:23 AM

I saw where my "Growing up Nostalgia" post took POTD yesterday. I have had a lot of time to sit around lately, with all the recent back problems flaring up. But, after ~2.5 months and a couple of steroid shots, I am (probably stupidly) going to try and hit some golf eggs this afternoon.

The "Thanks to all the little people" is not a referral to Bob, as some might think. It is a running joke that me and a guy who I used to play golf with some back in the day would share after a round. We both shot in the 75-80 range back then, and I will admit, he was probably a couple of shots better than me if we were both playing well. And, invariably, if he won, the first words out of his mouth would be, "I'd like to thank all the little people."

Needless to say, I used that line whenever I would win, after he did it to me the first time. We both still shoot in the 75-80 range, but I get there now about hole 14, while it still takes him 18 holes. I can't play with that guy any more, it would be too embarassing for both of us. I play with a group now that, like me, struggles to break 90. (90 would be a TRIUMPH this afternoon.)

I will consider it a success this afternoon if I just return home after having COMPLETED 18 holes, still walking on my own two pins. Wish me luck.

:)

Back problems suck more than anything that can go bad in the human body. I suffer daily with some of the worst pain I've ever experienced in my back every single day, and it limits my movement with every step taken with caution!!!!

You’ll play well . . . Hurt or Sick folks usually do . . . I’m guessing it’s because they never seem to over swing . . . They seem to stay crisp and straight all day!!!

Hope you get to “thank all the little folks”!!!!!!!

I have a retired friend who called one day. During the initial stages of our conversation I asked what he was doing to keep active. He replied that he played a lot of golf and he had gone to the course one day to see if he make a foursome. He hitched up with three old ladies and that they had become a regular group. He said that he liked their rules: when they got in a sand trap, they just walked into the trap, picked up the ball, and tossed it up on the green. Might be a good suggestion for you today.

I too struggle with lower back muscle issues and really cannot remember not hurting. I joined a golf league for Wednesday afternoons and play 18 before that 9 hole deal starts and never thought I would be able to do it but it’s happening. Pleasantly surprised! 76er if you go out with low expectations things seem to go well. It’s when I think Im getting pretty decent and expect to shoot lower scores that things seem to go wrong. Good luck and just have a great time!

That deal about Expectations on the golf course is oh, so

Apr 24, 2022, 11:31 AM

true. I always shot my best rounds if I showed up at the course not really having any goal in mind. If I EVER showed up thinking, "I finally found THE key to this game, I am gonna smoke this course today", well the golf gods would quickly smack me back down into my rightful place. Probably with a duck hooking 90 something round, instead of the 75 I was expecting to better.

I have no expectations today, other than that it will hurt at some point. I'll take muscle pains as they come, as long as discs don't impinge on nerves. And, hopefully, somewhere along the way, I will strike that ONE shot that keeps me coming back.

Anyone who is an avid golfer knows the one I'm talking about. The club doesn't even shake when it makes contact, and the ball soars toward the green, straight and true and majestic in its flight. And you kind of hold your breath, and say "BE the right club, right NOW!". And on those rare occasions when it IS, that silly game is worth every penny you spend.

TK you got to be careful when you get paired up with some of these lady golfers. Some I have played with were not long but just kept it in play. Ex father n law and his friend got paired up with a couple of ladies at the beach a few years back and they were like this round will take forever. He said those ladies beat him and his buddy like a drum ! LOL

group I play with would let me. Of all the parts of the game that have left me due to back problems, being good out of traps probably hurts me the most. I am truly a "cripple" if I hit an errant ball into a trap these days. And, since I hit it so short on most shots these days, take a wild guess on where those short shots land?

:(

I used to get into a trap to hit a shot proclaiming "Not to worry, I AM one of the worlds great sand players."

Nowadays when I get into a trap to hit a shot, I say "Watch out, because if this thing gets out at ALL, ain't no TELLING where it's going".

76er -- I'm wishing you the best of luck - I feel sure you have tried a few of the ""back problem golf exercises"" they recommend ?? -- had a spell with my back ( lower lumbar muscle ) and the exercises helped* -- now my right hand does not want to close like it once did, but as you said __ I just get with a group of ""Old'Poops"" that have some or all the same aches & pains as I, and we have a great day ( shooting around 90 or better ) or have a fantastic day when we shoot lower __ one day this week,I shot 49 on the front with 7 double bogys,a birdie, and a par ( WOW!!! ) shot 36 on the back nine,1 bogey,1 birdie, and 7 pars ?????? I told my playing partners that they played with my ""twin brother"" on the front and me on the back*** thing is______________________( I don't have a twin brother ) ******************

Again hoping you break 80 today, and the back gets better and better** _____ GO TIGERS !!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thanks for the encouragement, but breaking 80 is a "Pipe

Apr 24, 2022, 12:16 PM

Dream" these days. Breaking 90 is a more obtainable goal. I don't hit nearly enough greens, or make solid enough contact most times to make bogey my worst score. And, that's pretty much what you have to do to break 80.

I used to be a MAD scrambler. I think the most green in regulation I EVER hit in one round was 12. I shot 70, SEVEN ZERO, that day. Super touch with the pitch shots, leaving makeable putts.

Nowadays, the nerves have gotten deadened due to chronic back issues, and that touch is GONE. But, if I can just keep my head in the game long enough not to just have that inevitable "Blowup hole" stretch, breaking NINETY is still within the realm of possibility.

As the great philosopher Foghorn Leghorn once said, "A man has got to know his limitations!"

Sad, sad report. I only was able to make 8 holes today. And,

Apr 24, 2022, 7:05 PM

the reason why was not what I expected, at all. I have literally been doing NOTHING for 2.5 months but sitting in a recliner, alternating heat pad on and off, and trying to let the back calm down. That was successful today for the most part. The lower back didn't really hurt me. My NECK was hurting from about the 2nd hole on.

Butt, what drove me off the golf course was dizziness and vertigo? I expected to be out of shape, out of breath maybe, but nothing like I got. Literally almost from the Get Go, I was fighting the dizziness. Almost fell down sideways when I went to put my peg in the ground on the 9th tee, because the ground was moving sideways. End of day, right there. I have no actual desire to die on the golf course.

Obviously I am making a cardiac Doc appointment as quick as I can get one tomorrow. Something is amiss. And this time, he ain't going to talk me into "everything sounds normal". Because it AIN'T, and hasn't been for awhile now.

Thanks to all who wished me luck. I figured you deserve to hear how it went.

I was actually "even Bogey" through 8 holes when I had to pull the plug. 6 bogeys, a par, and a double. Not turribel for as long as it had been since I swung a club.

Did you check your BP when you got home?

Apr 25, 2022, 4:04 PM [ in reply to Sad, sad report. I only was able to make 8 holes today. And, ]

I've had those episodes on the course and it always came back to low BP. It happens when I'm active so on those days that I'm playing golf I skip my BP meds. With my doctor's blessing, of course.
