Sad commentary but the Romans in their coliseum glory...

Dec 6, 2021, 1:05 PM

of “Entertainment” never approached what we’re seeing in Sports (college or Pros) what with Fans demanding more & more and willing to pay big $ for it which is making the Pro Owners, College Athletic Administrations, Media & Advertisers ramp it up more & more so to feed their wallets and our still barbaric need of seeing top of the line Athletes entertain us.

Yes, the Romans fed humans to the animals..but our present day idolatry with recruiting mostly the cream of the crop athletes to play in front of massive crowds in arenas all over the nation..

lends itself to our present need of building expensive Romanesque type stadiums & training facilities as they did thousands of years ago..

such as the huge & opulent training facility that Bama built recently at a cost of $288,000,000 for their football empire, and so did Clemson & SC and every program with a heart) which makes this never-ending Entertainment monster so similar to those Romans that were caught up into it, thus it’s a bit scary.

Saying, Entertainment has always paid great..from singers to comedians to circuses..but today it’s paying even better athletically even though much of it is occurring at supposedly institutes of higher learning!

What a joke! If a college’s football team loses a game the enrollment drops, or vice versus.

So Thanks Romans..for your fabulous outdoor architecture that gave us the idea for football stadiums where We The Citizens (better known as Sports Fans) can still enjoy watching other human beings clash, conquer a foe which may result in injury or even death occasionally so to please our innate primal love for power & survival (winners & losers)..

and where this caveman craving is pacified, if you want to call it our need of sports entertainment, by the Principles in charge such as the Owners, Administrations, Coaches, Staffs, Media, Advertisers, Etc who all benefit in keeping it going, and boy do they!

~> Whew..I must have had too many cups of java, or pizzed off with OK for taking away our best hopes of another Natty in the next 5 years which has synced me out! ??

That's an interesting historic perspective, Bill. You know, things could work out for the best. That's my current take on the situation.

I think we the fans are more like the Athenians. They'd sit around the Areopagus and endlessly discuss the latest goings on, philosophies, coaching changes,.....

One difference, the fans attended for free (or told to attend) and were given free loaves of bread to eat during the long day at the colesium. Maybe when the Socialist take over, college sports will become politically controlled like the Roman games.
