Rutgers and Maryland to be making $100mil/year

Aug 18, 2022, 12:29 PM

Let that sink in for a minute. Maryland laughing at ACC.

As a football school we will be fine because we allocate so well to football. Problem is all of our other sports will suffer or not keep up. That’s the issue in money.

The name of the school is immaterial, the name and power of the conference is material. The ACC should have a bigger piece of the tv pie will never be the BIG10 and should even try to compare.

If I were Rutgers...

I'd pay my starting 22 on offense and defense, $1M per year. That would be my policy going forward. I would lead with that on every recruiting visit. "You're a 5*, but are you good enough to make $1M per year as a Scarlet Knight starter?" Within 3 years, Rutgers would be a contender.

The amount left over after paying your starters $1M EACH will still be TWICE what Clemson gets from the ACC. Let that soak in.

My math may be a little fuzzy but

Last I checked, the big ten actually has more than 10 teams in it....16 to be exact (as of USC and UCLA joining anyway). By that count, a billion divided by 16 teams comes to roughly 63 million a year. Far cry from 100 mil. Still a ton more than the ACC however. Where did I derail here?

There are other, smaller media deals to be cut...

and I don't believe Big Ten Network revenues are included. ESPN may eventually agree to a lesser package.

Give it a couple of weeks and the WSJ, The Athletic or someone else will tally up everything and make it easy to understand.

My guess is it will be ~$100 million per school per year eventually. The amount ramps up higher each year, sort of like how they do NFL contracts.

Amazing stuff. In a capitalist society, money flows to where values are. CFB is VERY important to the American public.

SEC got PWNED! Sankey gotta be shaking his head right now.

Trust me when I say Maryland will still find a way to bankrupt their athletics department before it's all said and done and accomplish next to nothing in the major sports along the way. Byrd Stadium is a home away from home for OSU, PSU, and Michigan, and next to nothing for any other B1G team that visits.
