Run D. 4.5 ypc for K. Herbert. Thoughts

My thoughts are: I am concerned about our ability to stone ND! We need to be able to stop them from running affectively so they are in 3rd and long.
Khalil Herbert had 96 yards on 21 carries. 4.57 ypc. VT line is not as good as the ND line. This was when Skalski was in as well. And Davis.
VT had 18 1st downs. In comparison we had 19. I was concerned all first half TBH. Most people were who know football. VT imploded a bit; but their ball control was exactly what you have to do. Don't let Clemson and Trevor and Travis get on the field. Hold the line of scrimmage and run it and get first downs. That uses and eats clock and shortens the game.
The ND RB I have to admit got 140 yards on us. But, 65 came on the one long TD! I thought we did pretty well against him. Other part of this was - we had prepared for H. Hooker all week and then got a passing QB. VT actually threw for more yards than we did 202 - 195.
Am I the only worry Wally about our run D? DGMW - we still beat ND. The guys we will have will make enough plays. But, i.m.o we are way better than ND. I think the game because of their ability to control the line; might be uncomfortably close though! Tigers still win!

Skaski and Davis play, then no concern.

When Skaski is out there he seems to suck the nerves out of the rest of the defense and they play free. He’s criminally underrated.

Speaking of Skalski - what type of injury was it? Will he be back in two weeks?

Vtech and ND share

One thing in common.. they both are great rushing teams.. ND also has a great QB, and a great defense.
I think BV will put a game plan together that will allow us to win it with the players we have. We need to improve our WR production, and we need to be better at grinding out rushing yards even if they stack the box. The offense is what worries me.

I for one can't wait to see what BV has in store facing a team he has lost to before in the same season (has that happened since he got here?). The man is a defensive genius, I can't imagine him having the same game plan, and the extra week til we play can't hurt for sure.

I agree.
Bresee and Davis and Pinckney on early downs. Then depending on down and distance - go to that rabbit package we used against Pitt. More speed on passing plays where Book was breaking contain and running for 1st downs is almost surely one of the changes. But, we'll see.
Defense as you said, "really did do a solid job in the second half"!

I hope you are right about BV being able to put together a great game plan for ND. He's the best in the business; so if anybody can he will. We differ big time on the offense. If TL is playing he gets us in and out of plays that DJU didn't check out of. DJU had over 400 yards on that ND secondary/defense at their place. The inability of the OL to get push is concerning; but we are 9th in the country currently in offense. Over 500 ypg average.
One change on defense I see happening is putting Bentley and Simpson in more. Speed to the ball carrier. ND didn't surprise us when we played. We knew they would try and punch us in the mouth and they did. They won't change if they are smart just to try and catch us off guard as most of the time when coaches do that it backfires. We'll see.

Herbert is a beast, our defense was outstanding in the 2nd half.

VT is a great rushing team, one of the best in the country. This was great experience for our guys. We will learn from this game and we definitely got better as the game went on.

Agreed. Perfect opponent and good strategy by bleeding the clock. Our offense on the sideline can't score. Should be great film for the young guys. Bentley got some run and his confidence should be sky high. Simpson is continuing his growth nicely. We will be ready.

VT is top 5 nationally in running the rock. That doesn’t happen by luck 9 games in. We won by 35 on the road. I’ll take that all day long.

VT OL is darn close to being ranked as good as ND. But, ND has much more of a balanced offense; was my point. Agreed VT was perfect for us to get a good look at how we "fit gaps" and fill holes. But, VT isn't going to play action pass off of their running attack like ND will. Which is why I am concerned.
After reading some of the comments though - I am feeling more and more confident!
