RPO

Sep 28, 2021, 9:25 PM

Sorry I'm so uninformed, but what does RPO stand for?

Run Pass Option. QB makes the decision based on the defensive alignment whether to hand it off or pull it back and throw it. O-line has no idea what the QB will do so they run block but don't go downfield so if the QB passes it, they aren't an illegal man downfield.

Thats why we lline up so fast so TE can see how the defense is lined up from above in the box and the qb can look to the sidelines for the recommendation to run or pass.

That playcall is lethal IF you are able to run it b/c if you are able to run it and the LBs and/or a safety sneak up into "the box", you pull it and pass it. And the LBs will always start downhill in a RPO bc LBs read the play of the offensive line, and since the offensive line thinks its a run, they are run blocking.

Run or pass should be simple. If there are 6 or less defenders in the box, you should run it. If they have 7 or more in the box, you should pass it. If the QB is not a run threat, and you can't run it, you make it very very very easy for the defense.

Thats what TE was talking about in his pressor. To take off some RPOs and make the decision for DJ so he has less to worry about and just run the called play vs having to make a decision at the line based on the defense.

And thats why our offense worked so good under DW and TL.... they could read a defense as good as anyone.

Another thing I have seen that troubles me with DJ is the decision he makes on handing it off or keeping it on runs based on if the DE crashes or not. I have seen too many times he is not reading the DE which is a big big red flag.

If he is beginning to hand off the ball to a RB for a dive into the A gaps (between the center and guard) and the DE crashes the line, he should pull it out and run it where the DE didn't stay home and keep contain. He has failed to make that read more times than I care to count this season.

Pretty good article here. Especially the end where different scenarios are discussed.

This article explains how quickly the QB has to make decisions pre and post snap.

Also part of the RPO package is the QB can decide to keep it base on the action of the DE and run it himself.

Also note… the receivers and running back need to read the same thing and adjust their routes accordingly.
