Roe vs. Wade about to go bye bye, returning America

Dec 2, 2021, 10:45 AM

to a MORAL, God-fearing country, abandoning our barbaric past since 1973! Suck it PP and demented, vile Dems.

From the Truth Finders:

There is one thing that every serious legal scholar, regardless of his or her opinion on abortion, can agree on: The 1973 Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade is a goofy ad hoc abomination of a legal decision. Don't take our word for it — take the word of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who called it a "heavy-handed judicial intervention" and "difficult to justify."

No more $$$s to PP to kill babies and sell their parts for big bucks!

That's quite an exaggeration...

Dec 2, 2021, 10:47 AM

If America ever does become a "moral, God-fearing country," this won't have much to do with it.

The overturn of Roe likely wouldn't have a huge effect on the number of unborn children murdered. But it would at least give states the opportunity to make better laws to protect them.

We'll fix that through stringent new laws regulating ownership of coat hangers.

states maintain the ability to determine when life begins and to protect that life - and this seems to be the case - I am happy addressing the issue there, at the state level. I understand that absent Roe the states still get to decide, and I'm all for that, but that distinction might not be worth the political capital - or the continued divisiveness - to make it happen. Not good for any of us.

Even thinking of it in a partisan manner, why give the other side exactly what they want, a crusade to beat you over the head with? Repealing Roe wont change a single existing state abortion law. But it will sure define another decade of politics.

It's going to destroy the GOP's chances in future elections. The GOP's already badly underwater with women. This will leave the GOP with pretty much only Evangelical women (and a smattering of other largely religious women) in their court...which by the numbers is about 35% or so by a generous estimate.

When you cap the female vote at 35%, you're pretty much guaranteeing a L. There was much ado about mail-in and racial votes this past election but virtually every serious deep-dive postmortem done indicated that the GOP lost 2020 in the suburbs...and women's distaste for The Donald had a whole lot to do with that.

Add in this decision and you're peeling off another chunk of educated or professional or even working mothers, the overwhelming majority of whom are strongly pro-choice.

Overturning Roe v. Wade would sort of be the definition of "Pyrrhic Victory". History tells us it is extremely unpopular to take something away when it's given...which is the reason serious GOP pols were quietly shaking their head that Trump was just trying to kill ObamaCare with absolutely no replacement whatsoever even put to paper, much less passed in Congress.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't understand how it changes anything, politically.

Dec 2, 2021, 11:11 AM

Haven't Republicans been mostly against murdering the unborn for a long time? Apparently they've still been getting enough female votes to win plenty of elections. What would change now?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I don't understand how it changes anything, politically.

Dec 2, 2021, 11:14 AM

It does. Bigly. I promise.

You want to see a vehement response to this, you should have heard my wife. Pure venom. And like me she's a center-right type who voted GOP most of her life. But she's also educated, successful, and very much a career woman, too...who assuredly does not like men telling her what to do; she's fought the glass ceiling her whole life.

This is not a good move. Nobody's going to listen, but the GOP has no idea what kind of can of worms they're opening up here.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OK.

Dec 2, 2021, 11:19 AM

"It does. Bigly. I promise." Nothing personal, but that does nothing to convince me, nor does the anecdotal evidence of one voter.

If she hasn't been voting for candidates with this view, then she still won't now, so nothing has changed.

You act like complex financial cases get done in two weeks. It takes years. But yeah...it's a squeeze, and it's ongoing. The bigger decisions are going to happen when the new DA Alvin Bragg takes over for Cy Vance Junior...and unlike Vance junior - who is a political creature who once cut a sweetheart deal with Jeffry Epstein in 2013 - Bragg is a career prosecutor who has a history of going after and prosecuting bad guys...and he's gone after Trump & Kids before.

Dec 2, 2021, 11:40 AM [ in reply to If she voted GOP recently... ]

Lordy you're whistling past the graveyard.

Okay then. I've talked to loads of women with this view. One of them is my son's girlfriend...who happens to be the child of oversea missionaries who attends SWU. She also happens to be one of the apparently almost 86% of women-under-40 who believe that abortion is a decision between a woman and her doctor and men need to butt the eff out of it. (Her words, not mine.)

I'll leave you to your convictions. As always, history is going to decide.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

who have been voting for the GOP now, would stop now. Nothing has changed about the GOP's platform.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: None of that explains why women

Dec 2, 2021, 1:03 PM

Because up until now it was all talk and no actual action. The GOP always talked about being pro-life because it was a winner for the Evangelical part of that base but when it came time to do anything none of them ever did anything substantive. Which meant other issues have spent the last 50+ years taking center stage...which, frankly, most GOP politicians were just fine with.

Now the GOP is the dog that looks like it's finally about to catch the car. That rarely turns out well for the dog.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That seems very odd...

Dec 2, 2021, 1:15 PM

To stop voting for someone BECAUSE something in their platform was accomplished. It seems quite backwards.

Add to it that no GOP elected official is doing anything here. If Roe is overturned, it won't be because my Congressman or Senator did anything.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If men need to butt out and the decision is solely made

Dec 2, 2021, 11:55 AM [ in reply to Re: If she voted GOP recently... ]

between a woman and her doctor, they need to go ahead and go all the way with equality and not make the guy liable for child support if she decides to keep it against his wishes. I bet your sons girlfriend wouldn't like that though.

Re: 35% of Republicans think abortion should be legal:

Dec 2, 2021, 2:24 PM

beliefs and opinions are exactly that. And I think the important thing that can be taken from this, is that if it were overturned, with a court that the GOP packed, it would be a death knell for the party and would set off a wave of demonstration the likes we have not seen since the civil rights movement.

and I really hope they do overturn it, I have no dog in that fight, but I would love to see how badly you all lose next year. The Dems would own the house and executive for decades. But I am guessing they already know this and will punt, again.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Roe vs. Wade about to go bye bye, returning America

Dec 2, 2021, 1:56 PM

There’s no shot that the Republican Party actually wants this to happen…it’s always been really useful as a wedge issue and to keep the evangelicals together…if RvW is overturned, I think this will become an anchor for the party instead.

Evangelicals may finally get what they’ve wanted…but I think the Republican Party is getting ready to pay the price for kowtowing to them for the past 40 years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Roe vs. Wade about to go bye bye, returning America

Dec 2, 2021, 3:15 PM

TigerBTM you are absolutely correct. We evangelicals would love an America without abortion but I don’t think the Republican Party has ever had the desire or will to go for it. It’s a political issue for both sides and both sides exploit it to the max. The Republican leadership might be about to know how the dog that finally caught the car felt like. “Oh crap now what do I do, I caught this thing”

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Roe vs. Wade about to go bye bye, returning America

Dec 3, 2021, 4:16 PM

Perhaps…i think we will get to find out. Personally, if Roe is overturned (as assumed) then I hope most state legislatures that outlaw abortion are smart/compassionate enough to keep ‘morning after’ products available and that those state laws that include provisions for punishment for those that travel out of state for procedures are deemed unconstitutional.
