Robot umpires at home plate………

moving up to Triple-A for 2022, one step away from major league baseball umpires at home plate moving up to Triple-A for 2022, one step away from Major League Baseball

NEW YORK -- Robot umpires have been given a promotion and will be just one step from the major leagues this season. Major League Baseball is expanding its automated strike zone experiment to Triple-A, the highest level of the minor leagues.

MLB's website posted a hiring notice seeking seasonal employees to operate the Automated Ball-Strike system. MLB said it is recruiting employees to operate the system for the Albuquerque Isotopes, Charlotte Knights, El Paso Chihuahuas, Las Vegas Aviators, Oklahoma City Dodgers, Reno Aces, Round Rock Express, Sacramento River Cats, Salt Lake Bees, Sugar Land Skeeters and Tacoma Rainiers.

The independent Atlantic League became the first American professional league to let a computer call balls and strikes at its All-Star Game in July 2019 and experimented with ABS during the second half of that season. The system also was used in the Arizona Fall League for top prospects in 2019, drawing complaints of its calls on breaking balls.

There were no minor leagues in 2020 because of the pandemic, and robot umps were used last season in eight of nine ballparks at the Low-A Southeast League.

The Major League Baseball Umpires Association agreed in its labor contract that started in 2020 to cooperate and assist if commissioner Rob Manfred decides to use the system at the major league level.

"It's hard to handicap if, when or how it might be employed at the major league level, because it is a pretty substantial difference from the way the game is called today," Chris Marinak, MLB's chief operations and strategy officer, said last March.

MLB said the robot umpires will be used at some spring training ballparks in Florida, will remain at Low A Southeast and could be used at non-MLB venues.

That will be a very interesting development to see.I was not aware of this being available. I’ve often wondered why nothing had been developed to help umps seethe strike zone —- and now there has. May speed the game up a little also.

Might as well replace the players with robots. Owners could save a great deal of money.

Don’t like it. I really have no strike zone consistency argument I can make, I just really don’t like it.

Baseball is full of things that make it different than every other sport, and yelling at the home plate umpire is fun and part of the stadium/fan experience. I know I know, it’s not about the fans. If you really want to improve baseball, have batters stay in the box and pitchers on a short clock that’s enforced.

Time is the biggest issue in baseball, not umpires .

I agree with this completely. Call me crazy but the human element of umpires in baseball makes the game more fun for me.

Why even have them at all. That pitch tracker thing does a better job than ol Joe West ever could. And instant replay makes the final calls on bang bang plays.

I'm agin' it.

The beauty of baseball lies in its human element. After all, an Error is a top 3 measure with runs and hits. It's part of the game. Those calling it are part of that dynamic and what make it unique. To me anyway.

In the grand scheme

Jan 20, 2022, 8:03 PM

Of things sports are not so important that every call has to be infallible. It's a human sport. Players make mistakes. Umpires will. Ok. Deal with it and worry about something that really matters.

I really like it. It will allow pitchers who can paint the corners to be rewarded and will take imprecise ball-strike calls and home plate umpire bias out of the game that less & less people watched in 2021.

Too bad Yogi isn't around to comment. He talked to the umps quite a bit. Guess Earl Weaver would have to kick dirt on a laptop.
