Robert Smith / appeal on targeting

Nov 7, 2014, 12:29 AM

There can be no appeal on this. New rule this season according to both Dabo and Clemson SID Tim Bourret. Smith is definitely out for the first half against Georgia Tech.

John Swofford hit job, plain and simple***

You used to be able to. Why the rule change?

Nov 7, 2014, 12:30 AM

And why can't the NCAA get this stupid rule right?

David,

Can anyone even explain what part of the rule was broken? Everything I read in the rule that was posted indicated that he clearly did not commit a foul - did not hit in the head and neck, did not lead with helmet, etc. He clearly hit the guy in the middle of the chest with his shoulder. What part of that violated the rule?

After talking to a few people, they said that - however slight - Smith left his feet and launched and that was the primary reason for the targeting call.

What if you launch yourself to make a diving shoestring tackle. Is that targeting too? Bad call and they can't sugarcoat it no matter how they try.

If a player cannot make a hit with his feet off the

ground, then most hits must be targeting. Absurd.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My understanding is you can leave your feet as long as you

Nov 7, 2014, 10:04 AM [ in reply to Re: Robert Smith / appeal on targeting ]

don't aim for and hit the head or neck area.

Re: Robert Smith / appeal on targeting

Nov 7, 2014, 12:44 AM

My understanding is that the league can review and lift the penalty for the second game, even though there is no rule to allow an appeal....

Is that incorrect?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sounds fair to have a lift option

Nov 7, 2014, 6:58 AM

since the league reservers the right to add an additional suspension past the initial NCAA suspension.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Only applies to Clemson! For UNC, can't add any penalty!***

OK then, David, what is the contact info for Swofford, Rhoads or someone? I say we light up the ACC office Clemson-style with emails/faxes/phone calls urging them to overturn it themselves!

Re: Robert Smith / appeal on targeting

Nov 7, 2014, 7:38 AM

What was he supposed to do stand there.he turned his shoulder toward the defender and brought his head away from the contact and he also hit the guy in the chest. Worst clemson call I've seen all year.he did the definition of controlling a hit from penalty.

Doug Rhodes has got to be livid--- his guys didn't overturn

Nov 7, 2014, 8:15 AM

this while he's on national tv saying it shouldn't hold up

Not sure why a current coordinator of officials is even on a broadcast like that as an expert--- it used to be they had a retired guy from another conference

wait...so who is right? that article or Dabo/Clemson SID?

Nov 7, 2014, 9:12 AM [ in reply to Re: Robert Smith / appeal on targeting------LINK's ]

Because what you just posted appears to contradict what David posted above. I want to get to the bottom of this!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

is that an ACC specific rule? big 10 overturned Illinois

Nov 7, 2014, 9:29 AM

Player suspension earlier this year. Earnest Thomas. Look it up. Get it fixed ACC!

Really? Bull...sorry, does this apply to just Clemson? Seems others can overturn it in the same season...
