Packer, who helped lead Wake Forest to the 1962 Final Four as a player, began his broadcasting career in Raleigh, N.C. in 1972. He made his leap to the national level at NBC in 1974 and remained there until 1981.

In 1981, Packer moved over to CBS, where he remained until his retirement in 2008. Packer called every NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, including the Final Four, from 1975 to 2008.

I remember in the early 70s, seeing Billy Packer & Jim Thacker

calling the ACC game of the week and the ACC tourney! I couldn't stand Thacker, but I always really liked Billy. Thacker was an obnoxious UNC homer, but Billy always seemed fair to all the teams!

I’m sure that you all know that Billy is the father of Clemson’s own Mark Packer.
He was a big time player and announcer. I followed him for many years. I lived in Winston Salem when Billy was just finishing up his career. He and the great Brian Piccolo are WF legends. Piccolo was my neighbor when I first got married and moved north. He played for the Bears for a short time and died at 26 with a rare form of testicular cancer. Perhaps you saw the movie Brian’s Song.
Billy became a very successful businessman in Camel City. RIP
