Rewatched the ND game today ( long)

Dec 16, 2020, 12:32 PM

Wasn’t as bad as I thought first go round. Bad start to the game for sure. Of coarse the etn fumble was as fluke as the one the week before this game. We really didn’t even try to run that much after being stoned to start. For ND fans talking about books fumble into the end zone let them be reminded that the bulk of that drive was aided by review on a long pass play that should have been overturned. I digress. Defense really dominated the second half outside of a long pass play to 87 that got them 3 pts. As for their last drive they had a nice run by 23 to set up a huge pass play on 16 in man to man and he bites on double move. 2nd overtime our drive starts with 1st down sack and 2nd down backup guard giving up a sack on a play that was open. Overall I feel much better about this game having some guys back on defense and fingers crossed maybe a Wr or two. Definitely have to contain book better on the scrambles but I like BV with a second look at an offense in the same year.

I would love to see the ND coaches reaction to Ngata, Ladson, and Ross lining up on the first play of the game. And then running with ETN and pull them back out.

(I know that’s not going to happen but I can dream)

I have never thought that the play that you referred to was a fumble by ETN. It appeared to me to be a botched handoff by a QB who was starting his first game. Much like the one in the previous week! That was a play that TL would have successfully made. Erase that one play and the Tigers win.
I’m truly convinced that if Lawrence was in the game for the final drive the Tigers would have won.

The injury on the last ND drive to Nolan made a BIG difference.

Saturday’s game will be decidedly different!

The fumble in the ND game was a dropped pitch by ETN, not a handoff.

On replays you can see ETN take his eyes off the ball because of the defender closing in on him.

Still something that may have been a little smoother with Lawrence in the game, but hard to put it on anyone except for ETN.

The botched handoff was in the BC game.

It actually happened on toss sweep play and etn just muffed it.

I still tag that muffed pitch by ETN as having limited snaps with DJ... and that is something you have to do smoothly to be fast. It was a little high and a little behind but if ETN & DJ were used to that (say had a year or three) then it would have been fine. ETN was WAITING for that pitch too long. Just timing. But also, there was a complete missed defender - corner angling in. TL would have spotted that... and DJ will to in the future I bet. But that is the trick with a freshman QB given what, 9 or 10 days as the starter?

I think that the lack of depth (for various reasons) on the defensive end eventually caught up to us that night. Shoot, I though our young guys and walk-on were playing at the highest level against a very good and very experienced offensive unit. We just ran out of gas (and bodies).

Book's gonna be dealing with a whole different animal

with Skalski and Davis back. Add to that our backups on D have some solid field time. We may be, in fact....too deep.

The absence of Jones in your post is something that I hope Notre Dame is doing also.

All of the comments and posts are about the return of Skalski and Davis that ND has never seen.

They are totally ignoring the impact that Mike Jones Jr has made in the games where he was healthy.

I hope ND schemes to help with Skalski/Davis and Jones goes wild because they think he is just another guy.

Brian Kelly mentioned Jones specifically in one of his press conferences...
There are numerous negative adjectives I can use to describe Brian Kelly ...

Unfortunately “stupid” is not one of those adjectives...

They are aware of Jones...

Did I read where the starting center is out for this game? If so, that is a big position to fill.

The starting center is out and the backup center has an ankle injury.

QB wise, DJ did a wonderful job and if the coach would not have held him back due to should ett r problems, the game has a different out CV ome, TL is a slight advantage with experience... i think the defense with be the difference in the game this time, your leader is back on Defense, you can see the difference when he is in the game.

Agreed, DJ played well. Having the defensive starters back will be the biggest difference in this game. Go Tigers!
