Rewatch UGA game thoughts

Sep 9, 2021, 10:09 AM

So rewatched the game yesterday and have reviewed my initial thoughts and here is my updated opinions:

1) Still baffled as to why DJ never took off running at times. Was he told not to due to backup QB depth or was he trying too hard to stay in and make the perfect play. Either way I am certain the DJ we expected to see will rise up and be the leader/QB we expect.
2) Our Oline looked a mess as a group. Really wonder if our blocking scheme keeps them from being truly nasty.
3) While I know TE is part of the 2 national championship staffs, I don't see great adjustments when things aren't working.
Overall every goal for this team in still in play with the exception of winning the opener. But I am not writing off another playoff trip yet. Lots of football to be played..teams will lose and fall out the playoff hunt, shockers will happen that shake up the playoff picture. We gotta work hard, make improvements take it one game at a time.

GO TIGERS!

The offensive line wasn't great, but with better QB play they were serviceable.

I'd feel better if we were told DJ was told NOT to run. If he wasn't, something is seriously wrong with him and with our offensive play calling.

Otherwise, I worry about him especially given the low level of competition coming up because I'm sure he will look great against the cupcakes.

I too rewatched the game again(painful), but did see the line hold up better with Tchio(sp) and Tate in there together.

I agree we had a couple of individual lineman who looked good. But we need all 5 playing well together to get where we need to go

Yeah, the Oline did what was needed for the most part. Not great play - but good for what Jawja offered. However, but most of the sacks had well over 5 seconds to get the ball out. Even then, most of the others were the DE rolling into the middle and missed block. Getting the ball out faster would have negated five of those sacks. Then again, receivers were cutting left, ball was being thrown right.

Some adjustments were fairly decent in the 2nd, but again DJ was the bottle neck. It seemed like he trying like a 3rd year veteran, rather than his 3rd start. I think we had a young QB kinda "fool us" as how cool he was against ND (although there were issues there) but it really showed vs Jawja.

I just rewatched it as well.

1) The OL did better than I thought live. I would have graded them an F immediately after the game, but on rewatch, I agree with the C- the coaches gave them. They definitely had some plays they whiffed on, but we had a couple young and inexperienced dudes playing against a great GA DL. That DL is going to give every team they play hell. We’ve got a good line ourselves, and I’d take the depth we have, but their ones are probably tops in the country. That being said, our OL held up for enough snaps to win us that game.

2) Where we really struggled handling the GA pass rush was in RB pass protection. Shipley is going to be a weapon, and he looks like he has no problem sticking his nose into blocking, he just looked a little lost as far as knowing where to block. Pace looked the most solid on that front, but none of them impressed. There were a number of sacks where our RBs ran right into the backs of two of our OL doubling Davis just to leave a gap for LBs to come flying through.

3) DJ had a worst game than I originally thought. I put a lot of initial blame on him having no time based on the OL, but that wasn’t always true. Deshaun and Trevor came with pocket presence built in. I’m hoping DJ can learn it, because there were a number of sacks and throwaways that could have been avoided just by sliding up into the pocket. There were a number of holes opened up by the OL leading the GA edge pass rushers way down field. He also seemed to decide on where he was going presnap. I think Elliot could have given him more RB dump off options, but there were plenty of times that was there and he didn’t even see it. On the plus side, he had a few really impressive throws when he looked comfortable. We need to get him more comfortable in the uncomfortable.

4) Elliot had a bad gameplan. One of his worse. Our OL did surprisingly well getting a push on some of the run plays. We only ran it a handful of times, but some of those short runs could have been more outside of a couple great tackled by GA DL and LBs. He admitted it himself, but he abandoned the run way too early. I’m also surprised we didn’t see him give DJ some more early throws out to a WR down the line of scrimmage. They had a lot of speed to the outside, but we’ve always used those just to build some confidence and rhythm for the QB and to also keep the D honest. We had decent success when we went there. Also, the plays were too long developing. We had one drive where we started showing quicker, shorter routes, and it was our most successful.

It was a frustrating loss for sure, but the mountain isn’t crumbling yet. Venables looks at the top of his game and the D looks nasty and deep across the front seven. Mukuba looks like he is what I thought he was which is huge for the secondary.

Are you surprised Lyn J wasn't used more in the second half? Seems like he might have been a weapon.

I’m not surprised because I think we had already given up on the run then, and Lyn J isn’t exactly known for his pass protection. I would have like to see him more, but I think his run to the outside is being a little overvalued on here. Obviously it was a great play by him, but they had one of there big boys, Carter, on the edge that play. The other thing that stood out to me on rewatch was the closing speed of GA’s LBs. I don’t think too many teams will have success running to the outside on them.

But if our coaches had given up on the run by then, why did they hand it off to Lyn-J?

I hope they wouldn't give up on the run down by only 10

or less, at least not in the third quarter.

We have to get a running game.
