Restaurants these days...Sunday was the daughter's birthday

and she requested California Dreamin' in Greenville/Greer. After driving out (almost an hour) we arrive around 5:30pm. There are two people waiting ahead of our party of 4. They get seated immediately. I approach the hostess and then am told it will be 1 hour and a half to one hour and 45 minutes before a table is available. I question this...there are empty tables (but I know things are now based on available help...not empty tables) and I wonder out loud how no one will be leaving in the next 90 minutes. The hostess...who couldn't have been a day over 17...holds firm.
We walk across the street to Logan's. We are told the wait will be an hour. I believe them because they actually had a large number of people waiting.
Frustrated and hungry, I call downtown to Hall's Chophouse where I get a recording telling me to leave my name, size of party, and number...and they will call me back shortly. Thirty minutes later we had not heard back from Hall's. (they never did call back)
We called Domino's and had pizza delivered upon our arrival back home.
I toyed with the idea of opening a restaurant in Easley about five years ago. A friend of mine in Austin has a concept there that is growing like wildfire! Thank God I came to my senses and passed it up!!!

they were treated like dog poo by restaurant patrons and when they wanted a fair wage they were told to "get a real job"....all they did was take the advice people were giving them.

I believe you are mistaken about why people at a certain wage level have failed to return to work. During covid many people got used to be given $$$ by the government and during that time they decided they liked not working. So, a segment of the former work force has decided to exist on minimum government assistance in whatever form that may be available to them. The idea of working just does not appeal to them.

Wait a minute. They got better paying jobs with benefits?? Well, where did all those workers go that they displaced for all those better paying jobs with benefits. Did THEY say "I'm going to find me an even better job with even better benefits, so all you guys that won't work for low wages and no benefits come take my old job that is much better than your old job but not as good as the even better job I'm moving up to. There hasn't been some huge expansion of the labor market and availability of jobs in the segment of the economy where you say these folks have moved on to. A job vortex above them didn't open and suck them up to these new jobs nor was there a big whole in that segment of jobs just waiting/begging for an influx of workers from the lower group.
Spare me the MSNBC crock that everything is hunky dorey and all we need is to find workers who will do the jobs Americans won't do any more bc ALL OF A SUDDEN everyone else has moved on to better jobs and the only place we need help is at the bottom rung.
According to your theory, the guys at the bottom have just pushed other segments of the work force(above them) into better paying jobs and so on and so on and that has created a need at the bottom level for jobs.
All the government assistance paid out and all the jobs lost during covid and so many of the people in lower paying jobs just aren't there anymore is just a coincidence and that it all happened during the same basically two year time period? If all those folks could magically move on to better paying jobs after covid, why didn't they do it before covid???

Yes, I heard about people dying and I also know that very many of those were in nursing homes and not even in the work force.
Let me get this straight, you think one of the major reasons folks at the bottom of the work force were not getting better jobs is that not enough people were dying, and freeing up better jobs for them???? That's precisely what it sounds like you are saying.
I laughed out loud when I read that. Now you're just messing with me.
Listen, if it takes less that 1/2 of 1% of the population passing away in order for the lower level employees to get better jobs AND YOU BELIEVE THAT, I don't know what else to say.

You might have heard that 528,000 new jobs were filled in the month of July and that unemployment fell to 3.4%. The moth of June had 360,000 jobs created. That's a great month. 528,000 filled in a month is close to a record.
Why would people want to work at a restaurant, where most of their pay comes from tips, if they could get a good job with higher pay, insurance and benefits.
We need more (green card) immigrants to pick the crops and more truck drivers to drive food trucks to bring those prices down.
3.4% unemployment matches the best under TheRump's 4 years.
You would know more if you shut-off the liars on FoxFakeNews.

For a person with a HS education and no other skill, a waiter makes a lot more than an assembly line worker or retail worker or other low skill position. Think $25 to $35 per hour at Cracker Barrel or Ryan’s. Plus there is no drug test which is important to many

Hmmmmm. All these folks in lower paying jobs just happened to have tons and tons of skills that were just waiting to explode and be gobbled up by the better paying jobs market above them, where that segment of the job market didn't care what their skill level was.
So, June was a good jobs report and how does that one month account for the SEVERAL YEARS of lack of employees in lower paying jobs? You guys crack me up who say "Oh, they all just got better paying jobs" as if it was as simple as that. Why didn't all those lower paid employees think of just doing that "simple" things years ago? Wow, who knew, I could just go get a better paying job and leave this job behind!!

it's almost like all of those people who were told to "get a real job" when they requested fair wages have now gotten "real jobs" and are not there to wait on you any more.
Worked in the service industry for 5 years in college at Clemson. You truly see worst out of people. The condescension and sense of superiority from adults was really an eye opener to how people view the effort it takes to run a restaurant.

I appreciate the inner workings of the restaurant industry. But I don't buy your "get a real job" excuse. I certainly don't believe people who choose to wait tables just opted to do that instead of getting a "real" job. I speak for everyone in my family in that we understand it's never a good idea to demean someone handling our food. My wife was a waitress years go and I actually worked in the kitchen of a Clemson restaurant.
There are jerks to deal with in every profession. Mrs. The Mole is now a respected nurse. But for some reason half of her patients (and their family visitors) seem to think she is still a waitress with nothing more to do that provide coffee and soft drinks. She is also supposed to accept sexual abuse, getting spat upon, and coming home with bruises from uncooperative patients who don't want to be there, are having reactions to medicines, or not getting the drugs they seek.
I just believe the service industry in in for a rude awakening.

Have been an ICU RN for over 15
They are the same job will a different “service.” It’s all customer service with a focus on interpersonal relationships.
That said, the things that happen in an icu to me would get people arrested in any other arena in our country. I accept it as part of the job, but it’s really unbelievable the verbal and physical assaults that happen sometimes.

Truth. There was a guy in the room next to my Dads in the hospital last year that kept trying to light up a cigarette with oxygen in the room. Thank goodness he was finally discharged and thrown out by security. People are simply crazy these days.

Not buying it. Most of the restaurant workers are in that business for a reason. Some for flexible hours and others for the high pay given their level of skill/training/education. BTW all jobs have their difficulties

I hate waiting for a table at a restaurant but we have found that most times by the time you figure out another option, get there and get on their list, the amount of time quoted at the first place we really wanted to eat it need up being about the same. In this case, by the time you got home and waited for pizza delivery, was it really much, if any, faster?

Dude, you honestly expected to walk in at a peak time and get a table? California Dreamin' takes reservations. When she told you 90 minutes, she wasn't looking at who was in the restaurant, but at the number of reservations already booked. Logan's doesn't take reservations, so the hour was based on who was on the wait list ahead of you. Hall's does take reservations and was more than likely booked, hence no call back. Next time make a reservation or plan on eating during off peak hours.
The government's response to COVID decimated the hospitality industry. I had a place and closed it two years ago, my wife and I read the tea leaves and correctly predicted the coming tsunami of operating restrictions, mask mandates, diminished labor pool and higher wages. Glad to be out of it, but have the utmost respect for those who persevered. Hope your daughter had a great birthday.

No...I did not expect to walk in at peak time and get a table. I figured a 20-30 minute wait. I did expect a better explanation of the circumstances.
Forgive me for not keeping up on things...but I don't recall California Dreamin' taking reservations and I've been eating there since 1991. I fully understand now that they do and would certainly have taken advantage of that system had I know.
I will tell you that my family stayed in the parking lot at CD while I walked over to Logan's. Then, we stayed there another 10 minutes discussing things. People came out of CD. No one went inside.
And I'm not giving Hall's a pass for not calling back...table or not. If you are willing to drop around $100 per person to eat at a place, some common courtesy is expected.

We are seeing the predictable repercussions of paying individuals to be unproductive and not pay their rent. Couple that with the mantra that entry level positions should pay enough to support a household. Who didn't see this coming? Also, as pointed out above, the ones who worked through the past few years took a beating.

I have wondered where all these restaurant workers went. Everywhere I go now there are help wanted signs and waits at restaurants with plenty of open tables. After Covid slowed down and the govt assistance expired (or has it yet? I don’t know) I thought workers would come back or new ones would come in. It’s strange.

Covid closures kind of broke a dependency cycle among many in the restaurant and hotel industries. Many found better paying and more stable work elsewhere, and they're not going back. Those industries are adapting with better terms in each area, but not everyone can pull it off.
Federal unemployment benefits have been off the table since last summer, and if you're experiencing issues in SC you can rest assured it isn't because we're throwing money at folks to stay home.

My experience over the last 2 years is that customer service is at its lowest level of my lifetime and it is across the entire country. Companies with good customer service are the exception now.

But i really never see it. Doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. I don’t eat out a lot, so maybe that explains it. Where i do see it is at pools I’ve managed. People treat guards like absolute garbage.
I concur that restaurant experience is definitely not what it used to be: longer waits, more rudeness, crappier meals, and more expensive to boot. Whatever. It is what it is.

I own a small business that is in the service industry. This is going on two years that we can't get laborers and those we do find work only a couple days a week. Or don't show up at all!!! Not to mention all the while paying them more per hour!!! In the end, this will probably result in us closing down a 30 year old family business.
As far as restaurants... they deal with the same issues, less seating due to less help to wait tables. Longer wait time for meals due to less kitchen staff. Yes, it will sometimes take 90 minutes to get a table and eat a meal due to lack of help in both wait staff and kitchen staff!!!!
Govt needs to stop paying rent and other benefits!!!! Force them to go out and find a job!!!!

I'm sorry to hear that.
I will share that I stopped at a QT in Douglasville, GA on my way home from AL late one night last week. While gassing up, I went inside and bought a drink and snack. $2.37. I gave the clerk...a woman in her late 30's (my guess)...a $10 bill. She counted out the change four times and threw it back each time. I started saying $7.63...you owe me $7.63. She said "I know...I'm looking right at it..." Finally, a manager walks over and counts out my change. The girl takes it...ADDS MORE TO IT...and hands me about $12. I counted out my $7.63. left the rest, and walked out the door.
Either QT or some customers got cheated that night.

Same thing with me. I was at a Calabash seafood restaurant last Sunday. About 15 people walked out as we waited. There was a group of 6 ahead of us. We waited and we waited. I finally looked inside and 6 tables were empty. I then realized their dinner prices start at 4:00 p.m. It was 3:50 p.m. They were waiting 10 more minutes. As far as workers not being available, if the government continues to pay people to stay at home, they will stay at home.

Wife and I live out of country right now and we've learned that to eat (especially supper) anywhere, 95% of the time a reservation is needed.
It took us a few nights of not eating to learn this valuable lesson.

I owned a restaurant for 11 years. One day this guy wants to buy it. I sold and Covid hit 3 months later. It was better than hitting the lottery. If my wife and I go out on the weekend, we eat around 4 pm then go home. After that things are to busy.

If people are going to treat you like crap I would prefer it that way as well. I personally don't eat out much and when I do its with my wife who uses open table or whatever. Regardless I am as charming as possible and understand that right now there is too much going on to cause even more with crappy attitude.

Sorry you and the fam had such a lousy experience for a birthday dinner. Hopefully the daughter was in good spirits regardless.
With California Dreaming, even when I make a reservation I expect to wait upwards of 30 minutes for my table upon arrival, and that was pre-Covid. Seems to be part of their schtick.

Any time my wife wants to eat out on the weekend I ask her what her expectations are for wait time. If she says less than an hour I say well it will have to be fast food. This was true before the pandy by the way - there are so many people that eat out all the time it’s always full. We can usually get in at Millers Ale in under 45 minutes most days and they serve you quickly so they can turn more tables over. During and after the pandy I have made it a point to tip way more generously and thank them for working - maybe word of mouth will help get more staff back. The price you pay for not washing your own dishes.

There is Rick Erwin’s Eastside, Adams Bistro, Artisan, Village Kitchen, 4 Aces Kitchen and several that have been establishments for years I won’t even mention, given you likely already are familiar enough with the area. I say that based on your interest.

Quality of the food is down, along with the service and you get to pay
about double for it. It is not really worth it.

Chophouse 47 is beside California Dreaming. The price level is about the same as Hall’s, but the food is just as good. Probably need a reservation there too unless you want to eat in the bar area. Another option would have been City Range on Haywood Rd. It’s a step or two below Hall’s and CD, but you can often get in without a reservation.

Oh and fornthe record my California Dreaming experience has always been less than great for getting seated. Now granted the one I used to go to the most was in Columbia but the few times in g ville seemed the same. And we are talking early 90s

times....Saturday's, you better have a reservation....At least twice I have taken her shopping on Satuday and about 5pm started thinking about where to eat....after several tries....called The Pizza House in Powdersville and hit the drive thru on the way home...
