The Recent South Carolina Rivalry
May 1, 2012, 12:38 PM
|
|
I just read a very good post about cheating and "USC" that made as much sense as anything that I have read on "TigerNet". The South Carolina Rivalry has almost always gone our way and I like to think that we were respectable winners, not good but respectable. What we are having to deal with is that "the sun doesn't shine on the same dogs butt everyday." Whether we like it or not Steve Spurrier is a really good coach. He is not likable but he has won at every college program where he has coached. Many of you don't remember that he even won at Duke. Duke beat won of Ford's best teams in the late 80s while Spurrier was their coach. All the sportscasters don't call him the "old ball coach" for nothing. He can recruit, he hires good assistant coaches, and he has a really good understanding of the overall strategy of winning. They had three guys to go early in the draft so we have been up against the best that they have ever had. There were decades when they didn't have 3 high draft picks and those three were on one team. They have gotten ahead of us and many of our fans have helped by constantly wanting to fire the coaches. "TigerNet" doesn't stay just among the Clemson family. We are in a digital society and everyone knows everything that is said and some of us give Carolina ammunition to use against us. Keep in mind that they have two of the last two years best recruits, what changed? Those type kids didn't use to go to Carolina. We need to find a way to compete with Spurrier until he retires. I think that he is the total difference. They have always hired big name coaches but could never stand up to us for long until Spurrier arrived in Columbia.

Well said. Again...you're up 25 games in the series. I can't say crap about that. However, Spurrier (and AD Eric Hyman) is the main reason we've turned it around. No question about it. He's about to become our all time winningest coach. That's sad in a way, but great for the current state of the program.

In fairness to Spurrier he didn't believe they had to.......

be bad just because they always had been - he didn't buy into that. Holtz shouldn't have but he didn't believe he could lead them to improvement.
Yeah, like him or not, he is a good coach and has proven himself everywhere except in the NFL.
The big question is what will happen to the ##### when he does retire and/or when the other SEC teams in their division return to their historical winning ways.
I want to see us return to beating them but beating them at their best and not beating them just because they're no good like in the past.

I too want to beat them at their best and I think they are at their best right now. They are making us better and it is going to be a great rivalry for the next few years. It will be a better rivalry if the Tigers start winning "The Game".

Spurrier lovefest...
May 1, 2012, 1:22 PM
|
|
What is your point here? Spurrier is a good coach...but he is not the offensive mastermind he was while at UF which many people still like to give him credit for. He was forced to abandon that offensive scheme after a few years of mediocrity because defenses (especially in the SEC) figured out how to defend it the more teams started using it. He finally learned to use the talent he has and is having success with it. He better hope that another Lattimore or Jeffery is coming down the pipes though, because he leans on his talent more than his schemes these days.
As far as recruiting is concerned, Clowney grew up a South Carolina fan and was surrounded by it his whole life. Clemson almost stole him from South Carolina at the last minute which is more of a testament to Clemson's recruiting abilities than South Carolina's. He even said in an interview that if he had had to make the decision ON national signing day )and not his birthday two weeks later) he would have picked Clemson.
I'll give credit where credit is due and South Carolina has owned us the past three years...but I'm not sure that the feelings expressed in your envy-laden post are shared by many Clemson fans in general.

Florida believe it or not was usuk before Spurrier got there. They had no SEC Championships or National Championships and were owned by their rival Ga. After Spurrier arrived they Won the National Championship they owned the SEC and they owned their rival, just ask Georgia. We can keep calling him out but the truth is they have changed since he got there,it just took a little longer.

No matter how you slice it, they still haven't actually "won" anything. So until that happens, I can't see that they have anything on us. Secondly, I can't fathom how you can say we were "respectable" winners. Ever been to Columbia the past 2 years wearing orange?

Confused on the second part...didn't you really mean we are "more" respectable winners than the coots?? I'm assuming that's the case because they're so used to losing without grace, they've proven incapable of winning with grace.

I think maybe the losing side just notices the trash talk more. I have spent my whole life listening to clemson fans talk trash. Its what you do when you beat a rival. Its not like after clemson wins yalls fans just smile and say good game. 63-17 was rubbed in our face for years. I personally dont talk alot of trash but have no problem with those that do. Its a rivalry and there are those on both sides who rub losses in.

My wife and I live in Atlanta and to be honest we hate losing to Georgia Tech more than we do South Carolina. Georgia Tech fans come out of the wood work when they win. They can't fill up their stadium but they can rub salt in a wound when they beat you.
As you might guess I am a very silent Clemson fan and only wear orange on game day and love to ride around the Atlanta area with my Tiger Paws on display. I do it when we lose as well and people know I am a Clemson fan. That may be why the Tech people like to give me a hard time when they beat us.

Fans are fans no matter the team. It's not like fanbases of only some teams attend some "manners class". The hatred of losing 3 in a row is pretty thick on T-Net. We will see how respectable the fanbase is after a win against SCAR. I can name several posters on here that will be doing the equivalent of dancing on a grave.

Im going to point out something very important the Scar 3 in row started when they hired ellis johnson. In all 3 years Scar made tons of big plays on defense to give themselves very favorable field posistion on offense. Their defense especially the first two in a row were what really seperated these teams. Lets see if how good lorenzo ward is this year b/c i honestly havent seen this great offense they brag about at scar except when they played terrible defenses (ecu, kentucky, clemson, and an overated nebraska). Look at navy vandy tenn uf miss st none of which are really great on defense really limited scars offense but couldnt muster any points against that stingy defense. If i were a coot id worry about tenn they were out bray, hunter, a starting linemen, and a rb in a game they barely won. They also shouldnt act like Clemson will just be an auto win from now on.

Garcia was playing against navy and Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt actually had a good defense. They led the nation in interceptions for the first few weeks and finished 18th overall in total defense. That's with playing Georgia, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Bama.
Mississippi State finished 35th overall on defense, and Spurrier has always struggled in Starkville for some reason.
Florida finished 8th overall in total defense, having to play LSU, Bama, Georgia, and South Carolina.
You could see some early flaws in Shaw against Tennessee, a bit of timidness or nerves getting the better of him. Tyler Bray ended Tennessee's season by losing to Kentucky, who we beat by 51 points. I'm not too worried about Tennessee.
I know some people are guaranteeing that Clemson is an "auto win" like you said, but not me personally. As I've said before, I used to hope we'd beat Clemson, now I expect to beat them.

Lets not fool ourselves tiger nation Scar is on the rise at least while they have Spurrier, but Clemson is benefitting from their rise and now more so then ever it seems the AD and BOT are committed to winning in the big 3 sports. Scar has lit a fire under Clemsons a$$ and now it wont be long before people( fans) will look at Clemson on their schedule and worry.

They lost their best DC and a number of other position coaches. They didn't bring in any big name coaches and had to hire in house. Whether or not that wokrs we'll see. They're suspect at the WR position and teasm will continue to stack the box until they have a vertical threat now that jeffery's is gone.

The position coaches they lost were replaced by current staff members who know the system...It won't be a downgrade.
Also, they have some talent in the wr core with that new instate wr. Losing Ellington was probably a big hit.
Despite all of that, We need to beat them at home this year. They may be just as good as last year, but we are 100% capable of beating them.

That's the most relevant thing in your post. Spurrier has had a lot of sunny days lately, with more than just Clemson.
It's about to get real cloudy.
