...Or something like that.

I don't care how many years it has been, the sight of Japanese tourists smiling and clacking pictures on the Arizona War Memorial at Pearl Harbor still p!sses me off. That place is sacred ground, and should be treated as such by EVERYONE.

And how many Americans have clicked pictures in Hiroshima and Nagasaki after America killed over 200,000???...

They asked for it.

Dec 7, 2021, 12:06 PM

How do you defeat an enemy who wants to die and refuses to surrender?

You bomb military installations not civilian populations like Hiroshima and Nagasaki (if it's done at all). Morally the use of nuclear weapons is sick. Eisenhower was against the bombings which says a lot. Truman should have never allowed it in the first place...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

500,000 Americans should have died in an invasion of Japan?

Dec 7, 2021, 12:32 PM

They refused to surrender, even after Hiroshima. What were the Americans supposed to do? It was either Americans die, or them.

Hiroshima was an army base town. The Japanese hid their military installations amongst civilians.

Japan was not going to surrender and civilians were being taught to fight with pitch folks or whatever they had if we landed on the main islands. Estimated over a million US causalities and many more than that Japanese.

Just talk with the GIs who were training in the Pacific to take the main islands and they will tell you they wouldn't be here today without the bombs. Most gone now but I have had many conversations over the years. Can't revise history.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's a naive and ill informed answer.

Dec 7, 2021, 1:09 PM [ in reply to Re: They asked for it. ]

Taking the mainland was going to cost us at least a million casualties. They were never going to surrender until the last man, woman and child had died. They had proven this throughout the Pacific campaign. They had also shown just how merciless, fanatical and ruthless they were while waging war on not just us, but China and others. There had to be complete surrender, or we would be fighting them again down the line. While Fat Man and Little boy were an uneasy answer, the alternative was horrendous.

A little late to the party but here I am. Operation Downfall was the planned invasion of mainland Japan. The US War Department projected there would be 400,000 to 800,000 KIA and a total of approximately 1.7 million allied casualties in the invasion. They projected up to 10 million Japanese casualties as a result of the invasion. After the first bomb was dropped the Japanese Premier (I believe that was the title) reiterated Japan's intention to resist at all costs. After the second bomb was dropped 3 days later, there was a change in that policy.

While the horrors of nuclear explosions is all too real, based on the pre-bombing projections those two bombs saved many more lives than were going to be lost by the Allies and Japan. I think it's important to accent the projections were prior to the bombing and not political spin justifying the bombs after the fact.

Het Pawsrule, it is real simple, don't start the war and we would have never used the bomb!

I recently reviewed some of the old THE TIGER newspapers online, and that time was an interesting part of Clemson history. It was a difficult time for students, and most had serious questions about what to do. The paper had some interesting quotes from students.

Students didn't know whether to drop out for military service immediately or continue with their studies. President R. F. Poole gave a talk over a loudspeaker during dinner in the mess hall that eased minds.

He advised that all continue working hard in their courses for the present, and when their services were needed, they could then served their country. Only a few left school after that semester, but most did in the next couple of years.

THE TIGER issues during those years were sad stories about former students KIA, wounded, or POW.

In 1945, Clemson only had 29 graduates for the entire year. The May graduation only had 13. Most students were either premed majors or not qualified physically. Clemson College survived financially by serving as a training base for Army and Army Air Corps officer candidates.

After the war, students returned to Clemson to complete educations, and the campus was bursting at its seams.

First off I'm very thankful to all who have defended this Great Nation. The one thing about this day was you always remembered because you could count on seeing it on the front page every year. That is getting less common with every year that passes. Nothing on the local news app today. Did not see anything on CNN of the Fox App. Before long it won't be mentioned at all. There are things that should always remain fresh in our minds, two that come to mind are today and 911.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You see less and less about 911 every year!

what went into that decision and such. I love learning about all the small things that never make it to the text books; the truth as it is. A lot of things happened, on both sides, for that to have gone down as it did.
