I remember my Mom (God rest her soul) and my Aunt Carolyn crying while discussing this on the phone.

I was driving to a sawmill to pick up a load of lumber. Heard the news on the radio. It didn't seem possible. I had tickets to see him in Fayetteville, NC in the coming weeks. Not that I liked his act all that good, but he was "Elvis". And, everyone needs to see Elvis.

I went to see him a couple of times in Atlanta. The first show was in ihs prime, and it was outstanding. The second show was still good, but he was not in good shape, had gained much weight, looked like he was on something, and not a lot of energy. Still, he put on quite a performance in his heyday. He died on my birthday.

My parents went to Memphis for a Shrine convention a few days after he passed.
My mom was gonna go to Graceland for a tour and was hoping to see him.
They talked about all the celebrities that came to town for the funeral.
I remember the radio station DJ announcing
“The King is Dead” top of every hour and then playing one of his songs.
Cannot believe 45 years has gone by....

The lives (and deaths) of celebrities were never really anything I was all that interested in, but I remember, as a ten year old, being stunned when I saw the news he had passed. I wasnt any huge fan of his, I was fond of some of his most popular stuff, but I guess because he had always "been there" and he was always ELVIS and such... seemed like a piece of America died. Today, I think about Elvis and wonder how it could be he died young while Keith Richard, Ozzy and others are still doing their thing.

I’m in Memphis heading to Beale St for the festivities as I type this. By Uber of course, because I’d never text and drive!

Go Tigers!
