Recruiting thoughts

Nov 30, 2021, 10:19 AM

Lately, Clemson has signed three star recruits and has lost out on several four and five star ones. Meanwhile others, especially Georgia, are signing more five stars. Um……..how are we going to compete if this trend continues ?

ESPN College Football Recruiting Ranking. ESPN lists a total of 299 recruits on the web site, with fifteen 5 star recruits, and 284 recruits that are 4 stars. Clemson will add recruits to all three of these sites until the first week in February 2022.

In Rivals, we show 10 commitments, one 5 Star QB, and we have nine 4 star recruits. Overall Rivals shows 250 recruits. Again, Clemson is still recruiting players that show up in all three of these sites.

247 Sports has 34 5 star players. As of right now Clemson has one 5 star committed to Clemson, and ten 4 star recruits committed to Clemson. Clemson is still recruiting players as the recruiting period doesn't end until February. This is the same for all three recurring sites I have listed. As I mentioned, this list will grow in all three sites as it mostly the same players just ranked in different spots on their sites. Again, the players will be signed to their schools on signing day.

No 3 star players are listed in these sites except for recruits beyond 366 in 247 Sports. That leaves 34 players scored as 3 star recruits. Clemson has only added one 3 star recruit from last week.

the site of your choice. ESPN had a very low number of 5 star recruits every year. Usually less than 15 5 star recruits overall from year to year.

Rivals has 29 5 star recruits (overall 250 players make up the list). 247 lists 34 5 star recruits. Overall 247 lists over 400 recruits, most of which are 3 stars.

Not all 5 stars become great players. Some fail to make the transition. And some 3 stars become superstars.

Just from the top of my head.

Kelly Bryant 4 star
Travis Etienne 4 star
Hunter Renfrow 2 star

Good comments all. That’s why I asked the question. Y’all responded with solid info that I didn’t have. I feel more encouraged. Thanks gang!

5* according to whom? College prospect evaluated by whom? An independent service who may have never seen anything on the prospect but video, has not met the prospect, does not know anything about them?

Five years hence, should the 2021 class not pan out, you can come back and kvetch.

Meanwhile, I think most of us will continue to support, and not demean, the current staff and THEIR EVALUATIONS.

Spoken like a C30-0T, but I like the Swinney Venables recruiting rankings over the experts.

A team needs 5* talent sprinkled in the two deep but also needs glue guys like Stalski (SP) and Boulware in the mix. Guys who will stay 4 or 5 years working hard to contribute. Dabo does a great job of finding the right balance.

Re: Recruiting thoughts

Actually, your question speaks to a larger debate on just how do you compete. Really a dynamic and in depth discussion because we have always been a developmental and player centric coaching philosophy.

It's what Brad Brownell had to face. In today's landscape, that's changed. More freshman are now playing (on high level teams) than 10-15 years ago. You're not even seeing oline and dline guys that want to sit and learn for 3 years, take a redshirt and then start in years 4 and 5.

Some teams, as Brad's had to do, use the portal. Goes against everything Dabo believe in. So, imo, Dabo has to try and identify those guys who understand our culture and are willing to stick it out... Like kj Henry. In addition, you have players graduated in 2.5 to 3 years like a Kane Patterson, who, if Clemson offered the masters he wanted would have stayed and probably started next year... Or at least been 2 deep.

It's not just a Clemson problem, it's a college FB problem now with the free portal. Dabo realizes it. That's why we need CBV and TE's to identify that talent. As well as be able to develop that talent. Good question.

Let's take a look:

2022 3 Stars:
UGA: 8
Usuck: 15
CLEM: 3

2021 3 stars:
UGA: 5
Usuck: 21
CLEM: 2

I'm not saying you're wrong... but the numbers sure do.

Re: Recruiting thoughts

Nov 30, 2021, 11:03 AM

Another quick look:

2022 Five Stars:
UGA: 3
Usuck: 0
CLEM: 1

2021 Five Stars:
UGA: 4
Usuck: 0
CLEM: 3

If you want to make the argument about the sheer quantity of recruits UGA signs vs Clemson, then that would be fair. They definitely have more room for error with the larger classes.

Let Georgia win the recruiting trophy. I’ll take the other trophies. It’s been 41 years for Georgia, we have 3 since their last one. Clemson never beats Georgia and Bama in recruiting classes, but we do OK on the field. Carry on
