Recruiting This Week PT: 3

May 7, 2021, 1:39 PM

Had some time this fine Friday so let's do some quick hitters for a Friday afternoon update.

- Let's get the bad news out of the way. 5* class of 23' QB Malachi Nelson will decide his college in July. That will without a doubt be a OU unless something drastic happens. USC screwed this recruitment up by offering another QB and OU took advantage better than Clemson and flat out beat them, congrats to Riley. Nelson has also walked back that he will be camping at Clemson in June. He will pick OU in June.

-As a result the QB board shifts. The obvious answer is Arch Manning. Clemson is involved, and that is as far as any team is right now. He wants to camp at Clemson this June, but no date has been set. His recruitment will last longer and updates will be very hard to come by; besides Clemson watch Alabama, Texas, LSU, and Ole Miss.

-A top 40 player at QB will visit Clemson on June 2nd. Dylan Lonergan is a QB out of Georgia .He also plans to visit U of Sc, OSU, and Alabama in June. Based on what I have heard Clemson and Alabama may be in the best position if the camps go well. Will have to watch his camp season, but his film is very very impressive.

-Another name to watch at QB is 5* top 10 player Dante Moore out of Michigan. Clemson has not been as involved with Moore, but he is on their radar. Regionally you have to watch OSU, Michigan, and ND. And please do not forget that Cade Klubnik is a borderline 5* for this class.

-As I said he was leaning OSU a few weeks ago CB Ryan Turner committed to OSU earlier this week. He had been to Clemson and OSU and BC was also involved. Clemson would have accepted Turner's commitment but he was not one of the top 3 CBs on the board. Clemson would like to take 3 corners and Jeadyn Lukus, Toriano Pride, and Daylen Everette are the top 3 targets, as they have been the whole time, Lukus and Everette being 5*s and Pride a top 100 player. I personally like where Clemson is with all 3, especially Lukus and Pride.

-Speaking of Daylen Everette, I said in the comments of my post last week that he would release a top teams list shortly and he did that last night. As I said then Clemson, UNC, and UGA all made the list along with FSU and Oregon. As of now UNC projects as Clemson's stiffest competition, he has been their multiple times and his parents just recently went to visit UNC. Couple that with his brother playing at a college that is only 40 minutes away from UNC's campus and Bly, UNC's CB coach, is a great recruiter, Clemson is going to have its work cut out for them. However, Clemson has already laid the ground work and built the relationship with him and are probably in the best spot right now as they have been on him the longest.

-Clemson also offered 4* CB Earl Little Jr out of Florida. Before everyone freaks out and thinks that means Clemson is slipping with one of the other 3 corners slow down. Clemson has been in contact with Clemson with Little for over a year now, and now decided to offer. If something does not pan out with one of others Clemson is trying to avoid what happened last year, when they had to scramble to find a CB and they were lucky that they were able to flip Wiggins. Little jr just recently released a top 5, but that will now be a top 6 with Clemson offering and he plans to visit Clemson in June date TBD. Alabama should be considered the team to beat after Saban personally called Little on draft night after Surtain, a CB, went top 10. We will see if Clemson can land an official in the Fall, if they do not already have the other corners committed by then.

-BIG news here as well. 5* class of 22' DE Jeremiah Alexander will visit Clemson June 1st. Being from the state Alabama is the biggest team to watch, but UGA and USC are involved. A decision is not likely until January, but this will be Clemson's chance to earn an official visit in the Fall. Clemson really involved here.

-Just a side note that I feel better and better about Clemson's chances with 4* S Sherrod Covil every day. I would not be surprised to see him commit after his visit to Clemson this June. Call it a crystal ball or whatever you choose, but good signs happening in that recruitment.

-Have a great weekend Tigernation!!

Thank you, Yeah that was my bad if I mislead anyone about Nelson. I said OU was the leader, but I did say that we had a chance but I had no way to know that he would cancel his plans in just weeks.

I realize Bly is a good recruiter but do you think Reed and Conn are the reason we seem to miss out on some of these big time db's. I know Unc got a 5 star db last year.

I do not have any issue with Reed at all. I mean the names I mentioned that we are involved with along with other players like Booth, and he is already in on some great ones in 23. I think that he does a great job and is one of the better recruiters.

-I think that criticism of Conn is fair at this point. I mentioned Covil who is a good player and then you have a guy like Sabb who is a 5* safety that Clemson potentially leads for. However, I would agree that recent safety recruiting has not been great. I would like to see how this class ends and how he develops guys like Mukuba before I reach a complete verdict on Conn.

UNC Kinda reminds me of Dabo coming in and taking on the big dog FSU. Article by SI, no, I can't remember but back in January talking about how Dabo is in phase 2 of Clemson. Obviously great getting us to the mountain top but with a team full of alpha dogs, it's a different coaching... Like Saban, how to stay there and keep everyone hungry. Thought it was a good article.

Anyway, imho, Conn is still learning college FB. One thing to coach HS for 16 years. Idk, I'm asking vs making an opinion. What sets Bly apart, experience? Connections? Identifying talent... Maybe its that I don't hear much about him associated with recruit y or z.

First, Bly is from Virginia and that is a state that UNC is trying very hard to push for, so he has a lot of connections. Also Bly played in NFL for over a decade and is able to pitch his experience and development. From what I have heard he is also just a great guy and he relates well with the athlete. I would except someone to try and pluck him from UNC in the near future, if anything ever happens with Reed or coach V leaving I would love for Clemson to give Bly a look.

Yes appreciate the information. I hate we lost out on Nelson, but would love to get Arch. Though it will be hard to get him away from the SEC, but I know Dabo & Clemson would be a great culture for him.

KC, I could not agree anymore. All I know is Clemson is involved, and that is all any team is. However, you just get a feeling that the family could fall in love with Dabo and culture once they take a visit out here. Think about it would you whether have your kid play for Coach O, Lane Kiffin, Saban who would have to retire sometime around when Arch is still in college, or Dabo. I am biased but I know who I would pick.

What about Travis Shaw? I've read that UNC is coming on strong.

Re: Recruiting This Week PT: 3

That is a Clemson, UNC, and UGA battle. Over the past few years Clemson has been able to go to NC and pick who they want, but Mack is trying to lock the border, and he thinks Shaw can be that guy. Shaw recently went to UNC's spring game as well. NC's high school football should be ending soon and we should get an idea of where Shaw plans to visit in June. I know Clemson wants him for the Elite Retreat but no plans as of now. I would think that Shaw also waits and takes visits in the Fall and makes his decision around NSD.

-Any of those 3 teams could land him right now, but Clemson has help with some connections from current and former players from Greensboro.

I totally agree with that. Find myself looking forward to each post. Especially for the weekend.

Wouldn't mind some x and o opines either. There used to be a fella on another site that would break down almost every play after each game... It was dynamite and I learned a ton from it. Idk if that'd fly here though. Others have tried and got berated because it was deemed as questioning Dabo.

Sorry, this is great stuff!!!!

-Thanks JPF16, have to take that up with higher power LOL.

-As always thanks Clemgal, I also love scheme breakdown, but there would probably be more qualified posters to do that. Recruiting is my main area, FYI probably will not have another update until around Wednesday. Will have another update on Little Jr, as I was just given info that he is looking to cancel his official visit to USC in favor of Clemson. Have to see if that pans out before I put into a main post.
