Recruiting This Week Pt. 2: Elite Retreat

Jun 9, 2021, 7:52 AM

Well we are on to the second, and unfortunately the last update of the week. Clemson Paw will be out of town until Saturday. However, do not worry I have got you covered. After Tigerbalm’s detailed recruiting post on Monday I have already reached out and he will be providing all the information that you need for the rest of the week in the world of recruiting. I have left you in good hands.

Now onto the information for the vital weekend in Clemson recruiting. This weekend has been dubbed the “Elite Retreat” presumable by those in the marketing department. While other teams recruiting weekends may have had more volume, Clemson valued the quality of those who were visiting, hence those they deemed Elite. We know that Clemson recruits in a different manner than most and the number of visitors merely cements that notion. So, let’s dive into who is in attendance and where Clemson stands entering the weekend.

-All four commits plan to be in attendance.

-You could make a solid case that no visitor may be bigger in stature or importance than DT from North Carolina Travis Shaw. I gave an update on the massive 6-5 (310) DT in an update late Monday night stating: “UNC gets a visit this week, they hosted him for their Spring Game as well, and UGA gets a visit June 17th and 18th. UNC has the advantage of proximity, but this is a recruitment that Clemson generally profiles well in once officials are taken in the Fall. Regardless of how the visits go, Clemson, UNC, and UGA seem to be the teams that will be there in the end. Still it is a big deal to get him on campus in June, especially around the other recruits.” Not much to change with regard to visits other than the UNC visit will most likely take place today. Shaw was recently tabbed as the number three overall player in the nation regardless of position by Rivals, and the number one DT in the nation. Clemson has been able to go into the state of North Carolina and hand pick those they adjudged as being Clemson worthy, with the examples of 5*s Will Shipley, Trenton Simpson, KJ Henry, and Dexter Lawernce whose recruitment seems apt to follow a similar path as Shaw’s in my estimation. Many more could be added to the list, but Mack Brown has made a concerted effort to limit Clemson’s poaching of the state to no avail as of yet. However, what better way to “mark your territory” than to keep a top 3 national player in your state with Clemson and UGA as the primary competition, and now you can see why Shaw’s recruitment may carry more weight than just that landing an outstanding player, for UNC landing Shaw could be symbolic of their relevance on a national level and closing the gap on Clemson.

-I mentioned Shaw as potentially the most important recruit in attendance, but in my estimation a very valid case could be made for Mauldin CB Jeadyn Lukus. I spoke of Shaw being a potentially symbolic recruit for UNC, but Mack could see Lukus in the same light. You could see how pulling an elite kid out of Clemson’s backyard would be appealing to him, kind of payback for the aforementioned recruiting battles between the two schools. Lukus took an official to UNC this weekend, and UNC pitched the idea that it was not necessary to go to the team that he grew up pulling for and pitched the family aspect of the program. Interesting to employ the family approach when going head-to-head with Clemson. In essence attempting to beat Clemson at their own game, audacious proposition to say the least. While I do believe that UNC has done a great job recruiting him and made an impact on Lukus and his family, they certainly made Clemson work, IMO Clemson seals the deal this weekend. It may not culminate in a commitment this weekend, with a visit to OSU being planned for one of the next two weekends, Lukus will not drag this recruitment out and a decision will be made within the next few weeks.

-Another priority CB target in Missouri’s Toriano Pride will be at the Retreat. He recently took a visit to the team I would paint as running second in OSU. He has a visit planned tentatively to Auburn the weekend after this, and a decision could be made shortly after. As I mentioned on Monday, I still feel good about where Clemson stands entering the visit and now they just have to close.

-Two targets who Clemson views as safeties will be in attendance.

-5* Athlete, who as I stated Clemson views as a safety, Keon Sabb will make his way to Clemson. I have liked where Clemson stood in this recruitment for a while, but this is, and has been a very close race. I think that Clemson may have the slimmest of leads over UGA heading into the visits with the two schools, and Penn State I think pushed themselves into running third after their official visit this weekend. This will obviously be decided by visits, but is very close right now.

-Virginia safety Sherrod Covil is the other in attendance. I think that Clemson and ND lead, while Penn State and OSU have moved themselves into contention with recent visits. Those four would make the lead teams for Covil entering this weekend.

-Two running back targets will also be in attendance.

-The first is RB Branson Robinson. UGA has been in the lead for Robinson for quite some time, and during his recent official to UGA there was smoke that they were close to securing a commitment. However, he left the visit uncommitted, a development that I have painted as a win for all other parties involved, including Clemson, for months. The first step at Inroads was to survive the Georgia visit without a commitment, Clemson did that. However, they now must attempt an uphill battle this weekend, Robinson has bonded with CJ and the hope is a first trip to Clemson can change the outlook of this recruitment. Alabama was slated for an official after Clemson; however, Bama recently just took their second RB, and I am unsure how that affects their pursuit of Robinson, but knowing Bama they will “make” the numbers work, LOL.

-The second is Trevor Etienne. He recently released a top ten, but the outlook on who the real suitors remains unclear in my estimation, but I do think that Clemson may hold him in a higher regard than others.

-The final of the offered visitors is DE DJ Wesolak. He has visits scheduled to a large number of schools, I think that Bama has gained ground, but Clemson and ASU may be in the best position entering the Retreat.

-Finally PWO OL Mason Johnstone will be at the Retreat. Johnstone is 6-7, and just recently picked up football again. I expect a commitment could be rather soon.

-While I will not be able to mention most of the recruits visiting this week, I did mention the priority ones visiting yesterday in Monday’s post. I would be remiss if I did not mention one of the more interesting stories with regard to Clemson’s recruiting tactics this cycle:WR recruiting.

-Clemson currently only has one WR commit and the potential to take a second or a third depending on how the numbers workout. The Tigers also have only one outstanding offer in WR Brenen Thompson from Texas. The in-state schools and OkState have pushed for Thompson. Thompson will most likely not visit Clemson until the fall and I would imagine a decision would not precede that visit, and even if it did Clemson would still push. However, Clemson has zoned in on two potential recruits in Antonio Williams, whose ability to earn an offer this weekend was inhabited by a hamstring injury, and Virgina WR Andre Greene Jr. Greene Jr has a visit scheduled to Clemson for June 10th, which he should also be camping during. I have expressed that an offer from Clemson would be difficult for him to turn down, but the lack of one being produced after his visit may be an unforgivable offense in Green’s eye. UNC and UGA have made him a priority, and A&M have pushed as of late, but again, I would still favor Clemson if offered this week. Not that is worth much, but IMO I would offer Greene. Side note that he is now a top 100 player according to Rivals, I told y’all that his ranking was drastically impacted by the lack of exposure due to Covid.

-Have a great week Tigernation!!!

Hope it's a good thing you're not going to be available the rest of the week. Appreciate the updates and hope you enjoy well deserved time off.

As for Coach Mack. As you know from his analyst days, he's profiled Dabo and Clemson success quite a bit. He laid out exactly what schools needed to do in order to stunt Dabo's success. Imo, probably the driving factor for his return. He hired a good staff as you've mentioned. While others have tried gimmicky stuff like chains, bagmen etc, he's stuck to the basics as well as used the portal strategically.

I know, the ACC has been dismall in bowls lately but the gap is closing and won't be as easy as the last decade... Particularly with the portal. I digress.

I too would offer Greene. Potential plusses well outweigh the downside. While we may not quite know his ceiling , we know he's a good character fit. One thing you said really stands out to this ole nervous nellie... The "elites" will be on hand with our "4" commits. Sure would feel better if we had at least half the class locked All In.

I can't believe you still are wasting your time typing all that Robinson info, he will be a Dawg!

From the link below:

Did he still feel like making a commitment on the official? Or did he at least notice a vibe in that direction? “Absolutely,” he said. “Yes, sir. We stayed there for three days and after every day was over and all the visits we did, my Dad and I would go talk in the hotel room. I would bring it up a couple of times about that and we had to step on the brakes because like I said the plan all along was to take all of these visits and see what all the schools had to offer. So yeah, that definitely came up.”

plenty of other nuggets in the link:

I can not believe that you are wasting your time reading and responding to a post on a Clemson message board. I understand that you may be depressed after two 5* have decommitted in the last week alone, and will both be heading to A&M because Jimbob beat you at your own game.

I have stated, and even again in this post, that UGA was the leader for Robinson.

BTW are you not the guy who, wasted time out of your day to read and responded to one of my Arch Manning updates saying that he was a lock to LSU or Ole Miss, LOL at that wonderful take.

I work from home so have spare time to read other boards. I bet you $100 that Arch doesn't go to Tater, if he leaves the SEC it will be for Texas. Did I mention his coach is a good friend/fishing partner of mine, in fact I'm heading down to our fishing camp in Myrtle Grove next week.

PS: Delp's mom is telling everyone in ####### that he is going to UGA so good luck with that
PS: watch Kirby pull in Shaw in, now that Bear is out picture

You should change your handle to Smoke Blower

LOL "Work" from home, yeah right

PS: I have said that UGA leads for Delp.
PS: I have said that Shaw's recruitment is a war. BTW what does "Bear is out picture" mean, I guess you do not have enough time to proofread or it is just that UGA education showing.

Thank you for the advice, I am now done responding to any post that you make, I would encourage you to do the same to mine.

Shyster brings up a good point. Can Kirby sell the upcoming Clemson loss to his 2023-23 recruits as a matter of UGA currently lacking quality players and needing better recruits?

Your too dumb to be Superdawg. That fool has been gone since LSU trucked the choking mutts.
