Recruiting downside of joining the big 12.....

If Clemson and FSU were to happen to make the move to the big 12 then inevitably the SEC will ###### up a school in NC and VA. This would immediately give the sec access and a presence to the entire south. Unless GT goes along with us to the big 12 we would no longer play any football games in ga, nc, or va. We would lose a lot of presence in those states making it that much more difficult to recruit in them. I realize the alternative is to stay in a dying acc, but I can't help but think we're at a disadvantage either way. If you thought the SEC talk was bad in the south before, wait until it spreads up to VA. I do believe we have to make the jump if FSU does, but in doing so it will just make the SEC even bigger and stronger.

never understood the location debate anyway.. recruiting is about winning and playing on TV
the SEC recruits in nc/sc/va/etc today, us changing conf would not change that, but I think we'd gain territory in other regions.

We could add texas to our recruiting grounds, especially with our coaches familiarity with the territory

An absolutely valid concern...

If Clemson (or any other program in the ACC) jumps to the Big 12, and the Big 12 only adds 2 programs, then you will be geographically isolated and other area programs would be able to use that against you. Imagine telling some kid that even though he's within 3 hours of half the ACC, he's in some division with Kansas or Iowa State.
The only way for that concern to be minimized is if the Big 12 went up to at least 14, and maybe 16 teams, taking them almost entirely from the ACC. If you had FSU, Tech, Clemson, Miami and either NC State or VT along with WV, then you could set up as the "Eastern Division" of the Big 12. It would be strange, and ultimately unstable - with Texas is there any other way - but it could be workable.
But if you stop at 12, and it's just FSU & Clemson, I think it could be a problem with recruiting, along with other things.

I agree, I think you have to add more southern teams. Otherwise who is to say that Clemson games will even be televised throughout the south.

Very doubtful!
At least the SEC schools won't be able to use the fact that we're in the ACC against us in recruiting anymore!

Recruits in Florida seem to like CLEMSON just fine - and we almost never play there. FSU and sometimes Miami. Maybe 3 times every 5 years?? Oh yeh - that BCS bowl game too. We have that EVERY year now that we know how to get there.

That is one negative. Say you are down to Clemson and the Chickens. If your family wants to be able to go to your games, the Big 12 doesn't work well for that. That could certainly make someone lean to the Chickens.

I think it could be an advantage for us in some ways. When you're selling a product and there are many products for sale that look the same (SEC), then it may pay off to sell something of equal value, but is a little different (BIG XII). We still have a presence in the South and trust me with the kind of TV contract the Big XII will demand, especially if ND is in, we will get many, many eyes watching Clemson. Much more than with Raycom.
Plus, when you're selling Clemson in the future, you can sell the fact that kids will get to play against all the teams in the Big XII. Not every kid wants to play in the SEC. Many would jump in a heartbeat to do something different.
In some ways I think it will be easier than recruiting in the ACC. We are missing out on a lot of top talent as it is because the SEC plays the card "why would you want to play against Duke, Wake, BC", etc.)
