New Story: Elliott is Clemson's "offensive engineer" in charge of Clemson offensive locomotive

Feb 16, 2015, 7:01 AM

Elliott is Clemson's "offensive engineer" in charge of Clemson offensive locomotive

The locomotive that is Clemson’s offense is gaining steam, and a quick look in the cab shows that Tony Elliott is driving the train. Why does head coach Dabo Swinney call Elliott the "offensive engineer?" What does Elliott say about the offense? Full Story »

Feb 16, 2015, 7:18 AM

These guys(qbs) at Clemson won't have to travel thousand of miles to the west coast or spend thousand of dollars for a personal trainer to enchance their skill level anymore. They have it right here in their own backyard now with coach Streeter. One on one personal skill training for the Qbs. This year qbs are blessed and lucky to get their own personal trainer without spending thousands of their parents money. Great addition to the delevopmental program for the football team.

Don't get me wrong, architects have a vital purpose but the engineers keep the bridges and dams from collapsing, make the cars go and keep the lights burning. Makes me wonder if he isn't a little happy that Chad is gone. I'm ok with it.

I think Chad's secret was that he came into a situation with

games as OC.

Dabo's probably happy Chad is gone because he's a happy guy and thinks, "I found an awesome Offense Coordinator/friend and now he's a head coach."

That's our coaches attitude and one of his finer qualities.

Offensive "Engineer"

Feb 16, 2015, 9:41 AM

Dabo needs to be aware of using the term "engineer" for someone who is not licensed. As a CU graduate engineer who is a PE licensed by the SC State Board, using such a term even frivolously is frowned upon, and technically is a violation of the state statute regarding the practice of engineering. Now, if Tony Elliott is a PE, we're OK! P.S. Don't ask me how the railroads get by with the terminology because I don't know--perhaps "grandfathered" somehow?

I think Dabo is getting that 'Engineer' from Tony being an Engineering graduate from CLEMSON with a 3.5 GPA. Not bad IMO. Why can't Dabo call Tony an Engineer? He earned his degree from our university.

or - did you just not realize that Tony is in fact an "Engineer" and you stuck your foot in your mouth?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Offensive "Engineer"

Feb 16, 2015, 12:18 PM

Nope,

There really is a state state that says you can't call yourself an Engineer unless you're a PE. Being a geek, he's probably thinking that someone, like an #### retentive engineer, could mess with Tony/Dabo just for kicks if they make his title official. PE's are taught to be detail oriented and sticklers about things being correct.

I'm not going to get into a discussion about the worth of being a PE, but you do have to go to an ABET acreddited school to become a PE in SC. So, Tony is close (as Clemson is obviously acredditeted - also, i can't spell I'm . . . good at math.)

Past that, lighten up everyone.

I think Dabo meant to imply that Coach Elliot will coach with
precision and a great attention to detail. Again, I believe the
term engineer was used figuratively. I'm happy to see that kind of
disciplined, precise approach applied to our coaching staff. Isn't
good coaching in ways analogous to engineering? No disrespect intended
to engineers, who undergo rigorous academic training.

Feb 16, 2015, 12:47 PM [ in reply to Offensive "Engineer" ]

outside of civil engineering, a vast majority of engineers (*gasp* i called them engineers) are not PE certified because their job roles do not necessitate it or even value it. On top of that being an engineer isn't even necessarily a function of having a degree as I've met degreed engineers not worth their salt and i've met non-degreed engineers who would probably put PEs to shame.

On top of that, are you going to serve all the people in this great state who use the term liberally in a non-serious way like Dabo here who are "domestic engineers" or "culinary engineers" etc? What about all those corporate jobs that OFFICIALLY use the term such as "supply chain engineer" or "logistics engineer"? While those last ones do grind my gears a little bit, I'd really like to see where all these people (including my-engineering-self Clemson BSME in '10 MSME in '12) are breaking the law.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That is a load of bull

Feb 16, 2015, 1:32 PM

It's hilarious. Even in civil engineering many people have an engineering title without a PE Cert.

I'd like to see this statute too. Got to be some misinterpretation going on.

The chapter on engineering and surveying in the SC code of law starts off by defining "engineer" as a Professional Engineer as defined in the chapter. So, maybe it says basically one cant call themselves a PE without being certified.

Doubt they mean engineer cant be used in a title. Even without some of the more liberal uses, I'd venture to guess most every PE had a title of Staff Engineer, Field Engineer, Project Engineer, or even Office Engineer, before they got took that test.

I'm not aware that any of us had referred to ourselves as engineers,
as you incorrectly implied. The issue was Dabo's use of the term to
describe one of his coaches. I'm sure there are engineers on this site.
I have a Ph.D., but would not get in an uproar if Dabo referred to one

Here's my take on the Chad!

Feb 16, 2015, 9:55 AM

I loved the guy and appreciate the offense he brought to Clemson. He was a master of deception. I do think, however, he was a tad bit stubborn and the system often over-ruled talent sometimes (particularly last year). In other words he tried to make the talent fit the system instead of molding the system around the talent, ie Cole Stoud.

I think our co-coordinators will be more flexible and will begin with talent and the offense is in very capable hands.

I wish Chad all the success in the world and believe if anyone can turn around SMU it is him.

You guys are way too upset about the 'engineer' thing. Only having the word Engineer in A title in my industry is simply something I've seen. Maybe it's to avoid confusion as to who sealed the drawings.

I also worked at a nuclear plant prior to being a PE and was an Engineer and was a Design Engineer at a fi as an EIT. Maybe it's not a law. Maybe design companies have elected to do this.

Whatever, I consider myself more of a people person that talks to the Customer so that the Engineers don't have to. What is wrong with you people! I'm going to go play with my Jump to conclusions mat now.
