Recieved performance review/raise for the year.

Mar 4, 2015, 1:46 PM

Performance review magnificent because I do 3/4 of what my manager is supposed to do. Manager recognized.

Raise, not so good. Manager apologized 4 times in 15 minute discussion, I couldn't get a bigger raise because I'm capped at the top of my pay band at the top of the ranking structure (There are no more promotions available for what I do).

Pretty much was told I have get off the hourly/overtime train into a different career path because growth has ended.

So do I want to pursue project management or people management? Projects, I don't have to deal with timecards and other administrative babysitting. People, I still travel to the sites to "Manage" so I'm not stuck behind a desk, which is the main reason I haven't tried to become a manager yet.

Do you like projects or people better?

Mar 4, 2015, 1:50 PM

more importantly, since you are capped out at what you do now, do they have a place they are willing to put you?

Well, we all know I hate people.

Mar 4, 2015, 1:53 PM

But I would prefer traveling to ease my hate, because I REALLY get crotchety when I'm at our facility for more than 2 months at a time.

They have encouraged me to apply for my boss's position, because he is moving to a different area. He's actually been cool about it, he has been pushing me to get ready for it for

Do you want your bosses job?

Mar 4, 2015, 1:57 PM

One of the reasons I loath where I am is the lack of growth. The assistant HR director/benefits lady may retire in a couple of years, but I really don't want to wipe peoples' ##### when they don't pay attention in benefits meetings. Even when asked over and over again, my boss refuses to all me to take something significant off of his plate so I am not getting any useful experience.

I've finally broken down and applied for other payroll jobs. We shall see how that goes.

Well people do projects so you can't get away from that

Mar 4, 2015, 1:57 PM

100%, but you won't have to deal with "my ___________ died", or "my hemmorhoids are acting up, I'm calling in sick", or any of that kind of administrative BS. I did not enjoy managing a regular department of people.

Project management is better for me because you get people temporarily - sure you have to motivate and assign tasks and follow up and all that junk but lots of times projects get the better people to work with anyway.

Also, getting your PMI PMP certification is very marketable...

I dunno, the delineation between project management and people management is so flucked up I'd quit on the spot.

For sirrius.

...I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent.

It sounds like you answered your own question.

"I'm not stuck behind a desk, which is the main reason I haven't tried to become a manager yet."

Is travel involved with projects? That could be a negative.

Managing people really isn't all that bad.

Mar 5, 2015, 10:50 AM

As long as your company is OK with allowing you to subjugate your subordinates with threats and violence, I mean.
