Clemson, I actually developed a small cottage industry by fixing 8 Track tapes. Not players, but the tapes themselves. Those of you who remember these can vouch for the fact that eventually, they would either:
Develop a rattle
Get wound around the capstan and get popped when you took out the tape
Begin to drag, distorting the music
I learned how to pop the case apart, apply a drop of oil under the tape "wheel" that held the tape (solved the rattle). On ones that had gotten wound up and popped, all you could do was remove the ruined section and splice back together with adhesive tape. It normally amounted to no more than a couple seconds worth of music actually lost. To solve the "dragging", which was caused by the tape winding itself too tight, you would cut the tape, unwind several loops from the center, and then rewind those on the outside and splice back together. This restored the "normal" tension and eliminated the drag.
This skill is now just another in the endless number of jobs which no longer exist. Who can think of others? I will start, with an ACTUAL job from back in those days, which has LONG gone by the boards:
Keypunch Operator: Yes, children, computer programs used to be made up of card decks, each card about the size of an envelope. A keypunch operator would actually type your program line by line on a machine, which punched holes in these cards individually. Each card was a line of code. A complicated program would consist of a deck of cards containing THOUSANDS of them. And, if you ever got them out of order, your program would not run properly when the cards were fed into the computer.

8 track player. It was a good stereo but was on clearance. I had a few 8 tracks but never actually popped one in, just using the cassette deck and record player.
My current car, a 2019 Subaru has a CD player but I have never put a CD in it.
Good ol' 8 tracks. Sounded great the first few plays then started to distort.

secondhand from a co-worker. It was an old Zenith Allegro. It had (built in all in one) a turntable, cassette deck, 8 track player, and AM/FM tuner. They were covering all the bases. (CD players did not exist at the time this unit was built.)

would get "trash" lodged on it from the tapes, and the sound quality would go down the tubes. They actually made "Head Cleaner Tapes" to solve this very issue. Pop it in for a minute, and you were good to go again for awhile.

You know, those guys that when you pulled in for gas & ran over the black hose that rang the bell inside, they would run out to your car, and while pumping your gas, would check your oil level, wash your windshield, and check pressure in your tires. All for about $6 - $7 for a full tank!
Now it is all DIY and is $30+ for a tank full + $2.00 for air.
Many of these service stations would also do light repair work and fix flat tires. Not so much anymore.

REALLY pay close attention to washing the windshield if there was a pretty girl wearing a dress sitting in the passenger seat. Much attention to de-tail was given then.

As a kid, I pumped gas at the ESSO club for a year. Got $.20 for every set of wipers I could sell.

I was the kid in the neighborhood that cut other people's grass....for $2.50. I haven't seen one of those kids for decades.

I wouldn’t have given him more than $2.00 in 50 cent pieces & a shiny new Susan B. Anthony quarter.
