TNET: Stats & Storylines: Out of bodies and out of gas, Tigers fall at Notre Dame

Stats & Storylines: Out of bodies and out of gas, Tigers fall at Notre Dame

Although still favored by Vegas, Tiger fans knew Clemson going on the road to face a Top-4 opponent without QB Trevor Lawrence, DT Tyler Davis, LB James Skalski, and LB Mike Jones would be an extremely tall task. In the end, it was only slightly too much for Clemson. Full Story »

Ryan Kantor,
Thanks for an insightful, well researched and very accurate article. And may I add well written.
I don't think anyone could sum up what happened Saturday any better. Some would harp on play calls and such but the coaches were limited as well to due to so many injuries. Should a couple things been managed differently? Of course, and in hindsight I'm sure they realize it as well. Let us not forget that they are human as well and weigh their accomplishments against their failures. As Dabo said, every goal is still on the table for us.
Hopefully these young men can recover from their injuries in time to get us thru.
Thanks Ryan Kantor for a great contribution to Tigernet. We look forward to many more!

Thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it.

This was the only non-Bama game I didn't think Clemson would win going all the way back to 2014. The situation was just absurd with all the injuries.

Thanks for being a reader!

Hi Ryan,

Honestly, I am one of the people who disagree with the play calling at the end of regualtion, but do realize that human beings coach and play. Hopefully, the injury situation will be better down the road and the outcome will be different. Always love to read your Shakin' The Southland articles. Keep up the great work! And GooooooTigers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great write-up but imho, you missed a couple key facts. One, we're missing our all American wide receiver Ross. Plus we're missing all ACC, if not 2nd team AA LB Foster. We also didn't appear to have Ladson, and it's clear that Ngata hasn't practiced enough. But we also missed ALL ACC DE XT, sat first half but still not 100.

In more additions, we were without ohroro and Reuben as backup DT's.

All said, as I tweeted Sat night, congrats to ND for their barely double OT W against our 2nd and 3rd string. Take away the 2nd play 70 yrd run and we didn't do too bad holding ND run game. Testament to just how great this team can be.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

My only fault with DJ over the last 2 games is his smoothness with handoffs and pitches. Both of the ETN fumble, scoop & scores came from an extremely high ball placement. But even late in the game Saturday, I saw handoffs that were not as smooth as needed.

A friend messaged me and asked if I thought Elliot is job hunting at the end of the season. The play calling has been uncreative, if not a bit predictable. I can't say he's not, in my opinion. Wouldn't shock me if we didn't see some turnover on the staff at the end of the year.

Thank you for an honest assessment of the game. The hinged on 2 factors, we could not sack Book, even often blitzing on almost every down. It was not Book's stats that killed us, it was in his ability to avoid the crucial sack when we needed it. The second factor was we did not have a running game and really have not all year. Our line may be good at pass blocking but they have no clue how to run block and that is a crying shame as talented as Travis Etienne is.

I agree. Very good at pass blocking, which requires a kind of 'stand your ground' mentality and posture. But when it comes to pile driving and pushing, they are not strong at all. Maybe next year, with another 10-11 months of work in the exercise facilities, they become good. I think we are okay for the next three games. ACCCG will be tough, especially if we can't run. Maybe we get guys back on defense and hold the other guys to 24 points. That should be good enough, I think.

The play calling on the final drive in regulation was terrible. Same as it was on the final drive in the 2nd OT.

A couple of years ago 'Bama was missing a key LB and Tua was 90%. On Saturday night, we were missing Trevor, wideouts, 2 Dlinemen, 2LBs, and one secondary player at the startg of the contest. By the end, we were missing more guys. I think it's the most talent I've ever seen a Clemson football team miss in one game. And I've been a fan since 1972.

Really good read and 100% Accurate, but…

We still should’ve won the #### game!

Those two turnovers are the primary reason we lost and were unacceptable.

But despite the two turnovers, despite the questionable officiating, despite all the injuries, despite a couple of poorly time penalties on our part, despite all of mistakes and all of our weaknesses with injuries, we still should have won the ball game!

The two turnovers killed us, but white killed us most of all was the fact that we had to lead with two minutes to go and we will try to run the ball up the middle three straight times and we had not been able to run the ball the entire ball game. Throw screen passes or pitch the ball outside or run a jet sweep which we haven’t ran in a couple years now, Frankly almost anything other than what we did would have given us a better chance of success. And had we run play action or some screen passes we could’ve gotten the first down we needed and won the #### ball game!

We have like 30 yards rushing through 58 minutes of football...what in the world led the coaching staff to think we could finally muster some positives in the run game? Seems like DJ likes hooking up with Powell, DO THAT.

Really all you need to know is 209-34 and that says it all. Block somebody, be creative not predictable and run DJ if you need to. Whysay you couldn't run him becasue he was banged up and might get hurt? You might say that against BC when we didn't run him and we already knew TL was going to out another week but with 2 minutes to go, TL coming back AND an open date-what are you saving him for? Do whateverever it takes to get one first down, get on the plane and go home with a W- even as banged up as we were. We will be fine moving forward but this was one the coaching staff has to take a lot of the heat for IMO.
