Clemson has a different focus this postseason

Clemson players say they don't have a “we’re just happy to be here” attitude this year. Full Story »

I see it as WE got 70 hung on us. We are part of who they are. We don't play a down, but we feel for our Tigers every down.

how we still have so many missed assignments in the 12th game of the season. I don't think this system is that complicated. At least, I assume it isn't in the secondary. Are the guys in the secondary just not that smart or what?

Why our offense literally did nothing in the second half of the USuC game.

There's something in these hills.

Re: Someone explain to me...

Dec 8, 2012, 1:41 AM

Because I asked about the defense missing assignments, not the offense. Since you asked though, Venables and Brewer, in the video above, said there were missed assignments in the game against the #####. Venables even said that on 3rd and 16 he dropped 8 and Ace Sanders was wide open for a 34 yard TD. That's 8 covering 5 and he was wide open. Guess why. That's right... missed assignment. There was another play you may remember. On 3rd and 19 Shaw ran 20 yards. He was able to do this because we were in man coverage. I don't know for sure, but I'm willing to bet Venables called man because it's the only way he could guarantee there wouldn't be a man running down the middle of the field wide open. I believe Venables and Brewer pointed out that if they had done their job they might have gotten USuC off the field and our offense could have possibly gotten in a rythm. No, it wasn't entirely the defenses fault, but USuC had the ball almost 20 minutes longer than we did and missed assigments was a big reason why.

Dec 7, 2012, 12:46 PM

We were supposed to beat scar and we didn't. We were favored and were at home. If it's not some staged rant, then we get a fluff piece like this. Who cares about accountability anyway? When questions have to be preapproved, this is what you will get every time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This statement was very telling.

Dec 7, 2012, 12:56 PM

"We don’t have any whiners or complainers that we used to have. That was contagious. Once we got those guys out of the program, we’ve started to filter in the guys coach Swinney is recruiting, and it’s a big addition to our staff.”"

I will say after managing large groups of people over the past 20 years that this statement is bigger than you first think. It is a HUGE negative when you have whiners and complainers. And a HUGE positive when they are gone.

And he did not say the "coaches" got them out of the program... he said "WE". Anything big sign that this program is moving forward, and the "TEAM" does not like the negative nancy's on the team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That quote jumped out at me as well, especially coming from

Dec 7, 2012, 2:21 PM

a senior like Freeman who's been around the program long enough to see the difference. If anything I'd say that this year proved a lot from a team standpoint in terms of not allowing themselves to have any letdown games which has too often been the norm. There's one more corner to turn and that involves winning the ones we're not expected to win, and I see this team coming together with a mindset capable of doing just that moving forward.

The only problem is THIS IS NOT KENTUCKY!!!

Dec 7, 2012, 1:02 PM

I commend Clemson in wanting to be focused and give LSU there very best effort. Why did Clemson not take this approach againsnt South Carolina or FSU? Answer: This team does nor have a good defense!! Clemson also has a problem of playing a complete game also. Look at the FSU game. They played good for three quarters. They played good againsnt South Carolina for two quarters. When you play better competition you should do so for four quarters!! Playing a team close such as the FSU and South Carolina game does nothing to change the image for this team on a national level. Everyone just simply sees a Clemson team that cannot deliver the knock out punch against better competion. Until they do so talk is cheap and as a Clemson supporter I do not want to hear the talk. I want to see the results on the field. Beat LSU and then you can talk. Clemson cannot win a national championship let alone the ACC championship until they do so.
GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!

Re: The only problem is THIS IS NOT KENTUCKY!!!

Dec 7, 2012, 3:10 PM

What I saw will prove my age.

In the late 80's, I remember watching games and seeing the OL and DL switching out players constantly. First team to Second team. At times to Third team - on both lines.

The team we have now, and most all of the teams the past 10 years struggled to go from just first to second team. If you watch the Alabama's and other teams with strong OL and DL, you will still see that substitution.

However, looking at the depth chart today, you can see that getting ready to happen at Clemson again. You see younger guys behind the starters getting playing time. Getting experience. Once we get back to substituting, you will see the games lost in the second half stop. They will hold a lead.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I sense your frustration

Dec 8, 2012, 8:45 AM [ in reply to The only problem is THIS IS NOT KENTUCKY!!! ]

And listen, have been there myself. Have went down the road with those exact thoughts as well. I know, its hard when you wanna "RUN WITH THE BIG DOGs" and you know you have to sit on the porch, right.
But when you stop and look at Clemson's team, I really do feel they wanna win. They wanna take it to the next level, sort-to-speak. But playing with the better teams in the country takes alil' time <~~(did I say that-lol)It comes with reruiting and getting good depth on your team from top to bottom. To be honest, thats something we just don't have right now. Especially in the area you need it most, the LINE.As good as we think our OL is,they would probably be considered a mid tere level to SEC standards (sorry)--and the DL,well..I don't wanna go there. So sure, we're getting there...slowly, I know. But to highlight your point, the team DOES NEED TO WIN THIS GAME (vs LSU)---like Ric Flair says, "to be the man, ya gotta BEAT THE MAN!"
Wooo!

Dec 7, 2012, 2:16 PM

“I think that we are becoming a more consistent program, that’s obvious when you look back on the past two years. That’s obvious,” Freeman said.

I don't know if I'd agree. How we lost to NC State and West Va last year is not the type of consistency we are looking for. Win some, lose some, that's fine...but 70 pts on a national stage was a setback for "consistency".
This year in our 2 losses, as others have stated, we weren't consistent within the same game. Decent first halves and then terrible half time adjustments. So...if we were reasonably consistent...we all would have a general clue how this game will play out. I for one can literally see us getting blown out or blowing them out or about anything in between.

the only two good teams we have played this season.beat us.ball state is our best win.ill say we are consistant when we are finally beating good teams every year.10 win season sounds good.but when you research the records of those 10 teams you see that it is nothing to brag about

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why, was that the attitude for last year's bowl?

Dec 7, 2012, 3:35 PM

If so then there are some coaches who failed.

My point exactly, coaches can't play a down but is it not their job to have the team mentally and physically ready to play. I hope the attitude has changed and we will be ready to play. Go Tigers beat LSU!!

really don't give a crap anymore

Dec 8, 2012, 2:10 PM

I live in Atlanta area. We usually go to any game close to here (as well as all home games).

None of my crew (brother, son, friends, family) are interested in the CF bowl this year. Easiest thing to go to and mostly we're saying we won't even watch it.

Just don't care.

You'll say I'm no true fan or whatever. I am a lifetime IPTAY member (as many in my circle are), alumnus, my son is third gen Tiger and my Dad played for coach Howard. Just lost all the steam for it. Can't buy the hype and expect a big stomping in the CF Bowl. Not hoping for it, but expecting it.

Dec 8, 2012, 2:25 PM

I sure hope you're wrong about the big stomping you're expecting. I understand how you feel that way, but I'm going to hope we really show up and play well and possibly win the game.
