Louisville Love

Sep 22, 2016, 11:12 PM

Ok. I'm sick and tired of this Louisville love. I understand they should have a lot of hype b/c of what Lamar has done so far and their defense isn't bad either. But the "pundits" are making Louisville to be like Alabama. I don't understand how Clemson has to prove themselves playing Louisville next week. It should be that Louisville needs to prove themselves against Clemson. We have been more consistent in winning in the past 5 seasons with plenty of turnover because of talent leaving to the NFL. Yes, I know we haven't been as crisp as we would have liked starting off this season, but we are winning. Even when we beat teams like FSU, Ohio St, LSU, and Oklahoma, there was still doubt about whether we could come back and win against lesser opponents. The narrative is always the same: Clemson had a big win, but can they bounce back and avoid the "trap" game. It's funny that we have "trap" games before a big game and after a big game. Yes, Louisville is on a blazing streak right now but people act like they can't be tripped up.

It should be a good game nevertheless. I'm looking forward to it and can't wait. Clemson will be ready. Louisville will be ready. The nation will be ready. Is it Oct 1 yet?

Real Questions!!!

Sep 22, 2016, 11:37 PM

They had better be ready...and finish. Offense should not be 3 and out as they were in 2nd half...makes a person wonder if they will pull it together for next week. Watson still doesn't seem to have found his groove. Hoping for a great game!

I agree. But the assumption is that Louisville is unstoppable and will score every drive. Dabo is managing the games so far with excellence. When the defense is rolling, there's no need to be ultra aggressive like go for it on 4th down often. The offense does need to be more efficient and Watson is not clicking on the deep throws which is surprising. But like you said, I'm hoping for a great game. I'm actually hoping that we blow them out. But then of course, we will be on upset alert when we play BC the following week. :)

The difference with the current offensive personnel and the Tajh Boyd & Sammy Watkins led one is that this one has had a great defense around them, and the other one did not.

Tajh & Sammy had to play come-from-behind fairly often.

I've wondered how our current offense would perform & approach play-calling if we were to get down into something like a 17-3 deficit in the 1st half of a given game. With the current one, we have not been in anymore than a 1 TD deficit at anytime during the 1st half of any game.

I've noticed everytime the opponent scores first, or when the other team takes the lead, we have gotten more aggressive and then would get a quick score.

Yes! Yes! Yes! This is exactly what I have noticed. Whenever we have to score, we have scored. I, like many others, would love to see this team completely put teams away. But I have been impressed with the team finding different ways to win. I have asked myself would we rather have beaten GT 26-7 or 40-21? I'm super impressed with the 26-7 domination we had. Our defense is super confident and our offense knows it's only them that can stop them. We haven't even peaked yet and we are beating GT in Atlanta 26-7. Wow!

It's the "flavor of the day" mentality.
The media always works this way.

Yeah, but at no point last season was Clemson getting the love that Louisville was getting. It took us taking Alabama to the limit until we got national respect. We are generally on upset watch and now Louisville is expected to roll over everyone. I actually like the fact that Louisville is getting a bunch of attention. This will allow our guys to refocus and play with that chip on their shoulder.

I guess being ranked #1 for the final 6 weeks of the season isn't getting any love

Yeah, that is some love. I can't deny that. But that was more for the fact that we were undefeated. But you're right, over the last few years the tone for Clemson has been slowly changing. But were we considered a favorite to win the National Championship last year at any point. I feel like the sentiment right now is that Louisville is considered a front runner especially if they can beat us next week. If I'm not mistaken, we got all the way to the college football playoffs and it seemed a good number of people were still picking Oklahoma over us.

They deserve all the accolades they are receiving. Why in the world would you think

Sep 24, 2016, 12:16 PM

otherwise? Offense 60+ a game with ease. The D was swarming, aggressive, and smothering. They beat 2 nobodies and then proved themselves against FSU. What would you expext people to say about DW and Clemson if we had performed the same way. They look phenomenonal.

You don't have to win 5 yrs consistly to win a Natl Champ, so not sure what your point was there.

I certainly expect Clemson to show up and give them a fight. We have yet to resemble on O the team we were last year. I hear people saying vanilla offense, etc... but were we busting out the playbook early last year?

Seems to me Lville proved themselves against FSU this year, and Clemson has yet to do so. Thursday night was a good start. Thank God for Venables.

Cheering hard for my Tigers, but to take anything away from Lville right now seems silly.

I understand why they are getting the accolades. They have been excellent on offense and defense. I thought FSU would be dominant this year because of the talent they had returning. But as I have said before and I will say again, I don't trust Jimbo Fisher. His teams have a propensity to come into games as if they are not prepared and sometimes his in-game management is questionable. Against us last year, Cook wasn't in the game for like 3 straight plays in the redzone in the early part of the game. That was the drive that Maguire threw the int in the redzone. Then FSU looked complacent against Houston and Ole Miss and then, of course, Louisville. Anyway, I digress on FSU.

I know you can a National Championship with a one hit wonder season. I bring up the consistency of our winning because it matters. Alabama is given the benefit of the doubt because they have sustained success at the highest level. The same can be said about OSU with Meyer. Clemson is getting into that league. Consistency should matter. We shouldn't be put on upset alert against GT when we have a crazy long streak beating unranked opponents. Back in 2011 we beat 3 ranked teams in a row (Auburn, FSU, VT), yet we didn't get the national accolades that Louisville is getting for beating one really good team. This year we have beaten Auburn on the road and GT on the road. We are 21-1 in our last 22 games going back to the latter part of 2014. That should mean something when it comes to putting teams on upset alert. When was the last time Alabama was on upset alert? Why is that? Because they win year in and year out; not because they blow a few opponents out.

As far as the offense is concerned, I have also heard that the offense looks vanilla. I'm not too concerned with the play calling. Our O line needs to block better on runs. Watson has missed some throws. Our WRs have dropped passes. Last year, our offense took time to mesh because Williams was hurt early plus Watson was getting back from injury. He had to regain trust in his legs.

My intent isn't to take anything away from Louisville. They have been nothing less than spectacular. I'm just wanting everyone to pump the brakes a little bit before we declare them an unstoppable force.

Anyway, we both want the same thing next week. Beat Louisville! And I think we play better as an underdog.
