Basically she's writing a piece which pretends to criticize his statements, but is actually mocking the absurdity of the 24 hour media cycle which dissects every word said by athletes.
You should be tipped off by the very first sentence:
Am I hearing correctly that Sammy Watkins thinks his football team might beat another football team?
But these ones help too:
College athletics has its share of problems. Drugs. Graduation rates. Tattoos. But elite athletes with attitudes like Watkins’s, guys with the temerity to think highly of their own team’s fortunes, are doing more than all these factors combined to erode the Cordura stretch fabric of the game.
She also goes onto point out that he wasn't even necessarily talking about himself as a player, but the team as a whole:
his feet may not even touch the ground while he’s running, so inflated is his sense of the squad’s worth
We all hear the criticisms of players who take trash, "guarantee" wins, etc...but the author is pointing out that there's nothing wrong with thinking your team will win or should win:
No, confidence in the outcome of a game is only 100 percent valid after the game is through....confidence is acceptable after victory is assured
The second to last bit is probably the best:
And either way, we don't need SamME Watkins, with his unseemly happiness concerning his team’s preparation. We need SamWE Watkins, a leader who understands football is a game of 22 moving parts, any one of which can snap at any second. A guy who can face the nation in a postgame interview and say, “You know what, I’m pretty sure, based on the scoreboard and all available data, that we just won a football game.”

and that was before Ray Tanner's threatening sit down with The State newspaper. Ron Morris, wrote about 3-4 articles a year that were either critical or told the truth about SCU. Shamecock fans got upset by this, because the media in this state has always been sunshine pumping for them and never reports on anything that may put SCU in a bad light. but I have read stuff by Anderson and Hall; some of it is in good clean witty fun, but some of it is biased trash that takes things abit far. These are student athletes. Sometimes I think they get abit too focused on their own inside humor and a paycheck to realize that.
