Tre Lamar and Shaq Smith have Venables excited about the future

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables doubles as the team’s linebackers coach, so he has gotten an up-close view of true freshmen Tre Lamar and Shaq Smith. So far, so good.

Jul 22, 2016, 7:28 AM

Has forgotten that Clemson has THREE of the top 16 players in the nation coming in for the defense. Let that sink in. THREE of the TOP 16 overall. This has NEVER happened for Clemson.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed this makes me very excited for

Our linebacker situation and defense as a whole.

Dont get me wrong, im excited about the offense

Jul 22, 2016, 7:53 AM

But im about to jump up & down from excitment about the potential season Clemson is going to have on D. Even more than i was last season. We are going to be STACKED. My only worry is DBs other than that we will be a force on both sides of the ball! Spot the #### ball already!

Re: Dont get me wrong, im excited about the offense

Jul 22, 2016, 8:01 AM

The secondary is LOADED in talent as well. Tank will lock down one side. Between Fields, Baker, Mullin, Edmunds, Wallace, ONE of them will man that other CB slot and do a good job. Safeties, you got probably Wiggins manning one safety position, with Jadar Johnson, Van Smith, Muse, and Simmons coming in. I'm not as worried about this position as some.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As has been the case recently... just reloading. Top 10...

If only these younger defenders got to

Jul 22, 2016, 8:34 AM

Practice against one of the best offenses, if not the, in the country day in and day out. Oh wait! I'm not sure where they will be when they start. However unlike some of Bowden era teams they will continue to progress through the year and will be better at the end of the year then they start. This is exciting Bc as is mentioned by several there is a lot of freaking talent and athleticism on this team. I do hope we have a very physical fall camp but I hope we can avoid hugely impactful injuries as well.

exactly...our defense may look bad in practice but come game day, they'll be ready for the opposing offense after scrimmaging against the best offense in the nation all week.

I think we have more depth on the D than last year... last year Boulware and Shaq and others played hurt most of the second half of the year, but they and Mac played almost every snap in close games. I expect us to have a true 2 deep on the DLs and LBs this year, I hope we do at DB as well and I think we will if Baker gets healthy.
I think our D will be rated higher than last year's.

Must mean these two could be the greatest pair of LBs in Clemson history.

I am not sure they will be the greatest but they might look like it playing behind Christian and Dexter! :) I do not think the centers and guards will be blocking LBs very often!

The Judge , Andy Headon , Levon Kirkland , Ed McDaniel , Keith Adams , Wardell Rouse , Leroy Hill, Anthony Simmons , Tony Steward and Stephone Anthony .

The LB tradition and pipeline to the NFL is getting richer and more competitive by the season .
This is fun .

Anthony Simmons provided the greatest highlight for me

Jul 23, 2016, 9:48 AM

when a close friend and I decided at the last possible second to drive to Tallahassee.
CU was an under dog went in and destroyed the Criminoles. Anthony blew the game open with
an interception for a TD and cruised into the end zone with his arms spread like a 747.
What a game I will never forget that or Anthony Simmons (R.I.P.)

You might be right. You never hear BV speak so glowingly about players. It seems he is giddy about them both, and maybe especially about Tre. We have solid backers in front of them on the depth start now, but it's going to be harder and harder to keep them off the field as the season goes on.

It's about time we heard something about our '16 studs! Thanks for the morning read TNet! Long overdue and much appreciated!! Can't wait to watch us play this season.

Venables has shown a tendency to overplay his starters and

Jul 22, 2016, 9:02 AM

not trust the backups enough to give them enough meaningful reps and let his starters rest. We got worn down defensively late in games and late in the season last year as a result.

We are awfully young and inexperienced from a depth standpoint at several defensive position groups. Does he trust his backups in the secondary, at linebacker and at DE to avoid those same issues this year? That will be a key this year.

I'm not sure of your point.

First you say Venables plays the starters too much, then you say we are awfully young and inexperienced.

Do you want him to play young and inexperienced players more, if they aren't ready?

We had close games, early last year.

We could develop players early that aren't ready and lose games and just not make the title game, playoff game and championship.

I trust Venables to play to win the game!

Jul 22, 2016, 9:22 AM

I'm thinking we rotate a lot more than last year. Would be nice to get up on Auburn early to give the younger guys 3 games of valuable PT before Thursday night at GT. Hopefully a couple of 3 and outs early from our D and I expect DW to be on point.

Jul 22, 2016, 9:39 AM [ in reply to Re: Venables has shown a tendency to overplay his starters and ]

BV has a tendency to overplay his starters and they get worn down late in games and late in the season. With our young and inexperienced depth this year, it would seem likely that it will be difficult for him to break that pattern.

Re: Read it again.

Jul 22, 2016, 10:00 AM

So you don't like Venables substitution pattern?

How do you know he overplays his starters?

Maybe we don't have depth?

The last two seasons we have had the number 1 and number 10 defense and play a HUNH offense, which makes it tougher on a defense, in general. We lose large numbers of players as juniors to the NFL.

I'm not lucky enough to attend practice. I feel sure we would play backups more, if they had the ability and knowledge of the system to play. We'll substitute defensive tackles like crazy, this year - cornerbacks and safeties - not so much.

I hope we don't go back to Kevin Steele.

If you listen to Coach Swinney and Coach Venables, they

Jul 22, 2016, 10:06 AM

both acknowledge what happened to the defense last year. It's not a secret. We gave up 33 points per game over our last 4 games.

If we want to win it all this year, we need to be better defensively at the end of the year.

Re: If you listen to Coach Swinney and Coach Venables, they

Jul 22, 2016, 12:09 PM

I think we will , because our recruiting has answered depth and it has answered with impact ability . We've gotten to a point in this game where CDS and CBV are able to plug and play , so I look at it going fwd where we will be less stressed and less tired nearing the end of games , and seasons .

Re: Read it again.

Jul 22, 2016, 12:48 PM [ in reply to Read it again. ]

Don't agree with you at all. I don't believe he overplayed the starters or wore them down.
It wasn't being worn down that caused the reduction in the defense later in the year. There were several players who weren't quite giving it their all late in the season.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Didn't we lose all 3 projected backups in August

Jul 22, 2016, 3:09 PM [ in reply to Venables has shown a tendency to overplay his starters and ]

last year. 2 to injury and one to wanting just to concentrate on his education ? That means what were the back ups in the season were 3rd stringers the first week of August. That'll make you ride those starters more. We also lost a back up DE to to injury and one to credit cards.

There's more depth on this D this year than last.

I think with smith and lemar coming in and being ready as much as you can til fall camp gives us much more talented depth this year. I feel like we will rotate these guys in more this year if your that good coach v won't keep you off the field. We didn't have very good depth last year
