Question regarding Defense

Apr 17, 2023, 10:56 PM

What are y’all so worried about?

I’m going to say it and Im sure most agree. This defense is going to dominate. With all of the expectations for the offense, most people have not even worried about what an elite defense can do for a team. The DBs looked phenomenal. I haven’t seen us have studs like this in a while. Our D-Line will be disruptive, that’s a given. And then Barrett Carter is up for a top LB in the country season.

Feeling like a 2017 type of defense. Of course not the same experience, but there is a lot of experience. And some very instinctful, fast, strong players.

The offense will come along, but the defense will hold us as always until then. And when the offense clicks, the defense will play even better. Likely for the end season stretch. Calling for a Nate Wiggins pick-6 in Willy B.

I don’t understand why you’re so convinced our defense will be so dominant

since last year’s defense wasn’t a top 25 overall defense. Three players from that defense are predicted to be drafted in the first round next week, so logic dictates that we will probably not be as good this year without them.

If you’re basing your opinion of our defense on the spring game, remember that they were going against an offense that was missing half of its linemen, over half of its receivers, and was also learning a new offensive scheme.

Were these studs injured last year and unable to contribute?

Were these studs in high school last year?

Without justifying the claim that we will be a dominant defense this year, it's just baseless optimism.

I really don’t understand this guy anymore.

You believe Brownell is our right guy and will get us to an NCAAT next year.

But you think it’s just baseless optimism to think a Clemson Football Defense can be elite?

because you're uncomfortable with someone daring to question the football program is weak.

You're allowed to be excited about our defense, but don't get upset when someone asks you to justify your optimism.

In other words, show your work.

Our defensive line is going to be disruptive, love the experience and young studs just brought in. Our linebackers are as good as anyone in the country. Our secondary is a year older, stronger, wiser. Naturally, we need to stay healthy! Talent abounds.release the Kraken Wes!

I hate to admit your sarcastic answer is a point. Spring game leaves us the fans almost completely in the dark and really gave us minimal indicators of what this team will look like come fall.

My answer wasn't sarcastic. It was 100% serious.

I'm all for being excited about the potential of our players, but an underachieving defense minus three of its biggest stars does not suggest that the defense will be dramatically better this year.

Technically yes we finished 28th. But that defense really was better than it may have shown at times.

Few things. The offense was once again not good. Our defense was constantly gassed because DJ either went 3 & out or turned it over. When you saw Cade come in vs UNC, you could see the immediate change of motivation for the defense. Even with how bad the offense was, that defense got better later in the season.

The Tennessee game was a special situation and I really don’t think our guys were into it. We missed the playoff barely. It hurt.

I’m just basing it off of how the players played and looked on Saturday. There’s no denying they looked incredible with their size. And the speed all around just made me see something I haven’t seen in a while with the whole unit of DBs. Mickens had a pick, Barnes, and Mukuba.

The offense was limited, but the point is the defense looked farther along that they already were.

So you're claiming that the defense was better than they looked last year, mostly because our offense wasn't good, and that the defense played better later in the season, but we are supposed to ignore the game against the best team we played late in the year because our defense just wasn't into it.

LOL.

At least you admit that most of your excitement about this year's defense is based on what you saw in the spring game. And again, they were playing against an offense that had a ton of injuries and is learning a new system, and who honestly has very real issues to overcome at WR and QB.

You can't be serious. We lost one lineman who was injured and had a lot of personal issues last year and another one who acted like he really didn't want to play. We have guys stepping in that will be as good or maybe better. Our linebackers have another year of experience as well as our DB's. We will have an outstanding defense.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Bresee and Murphy weren't our best options last year

1

Apr 18, 2023, 10:29 AM

then they shouldn't have played.

But you and I both know that they were our best options, so for you to suggest that the guys stepping will be as good or better, you're counting on significant improvement from those guys in a short period of time.

Additional experience for the guys we have is great, but the teams we play against will have guys with additional experience too. We aren't the only ones with players who have hopefully improved.

Murphy and Bresee were non-factors last year. Bresee for understandable reason, Murphy was just lazy and took the year off. They'll go in the first round not because of production, but because of their physical stats. I think KJ Henry is the bigger loss, since he never took a play off. But we're deep at defensive line. The guys still there aren't chopped liver. We also brought in multiple 5 stars, and saw a high school senior dominate on Saturday. The linebackers are mostly back and could be 2 All Americans. And the defensive backs looked phenomenal on Saturday and Cade said they were the best he's seen since he's been at Clemson. So why wouldn't he think the defense would be good?

And keep in mind that defensive stats depend heavily on how long the defense is on the field. Last year, we were better than you're saying. Clemson was the #10 rushing defense considering yards per rush. We were 22 scoring, which is pretty impressive considering we were terrible in time of possession and in the top 25 for offensive three-and-outs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I never said that our defense won't be good.

2

Apr 18, 2023, 10:38 AM

I said that expecting them to be dominant next year seems unjustified.

Again, if Murphy and Bresee were liabilities then they shouldn't have been playing. If "best is the standard and "next man up" and "we too deep" apply, then they should've been on the bench more while their backups played more. That didn't happen, so either the backups weren't as good, or our coaches weren't playing the best players.

I'm assuming that our coaches did play the best players last year, which means that the guys stepping in for Bresee, Murphy, and Henry weren't as good. If you and others are expecting the replacements to be better this year than those guys were last year, then you need to realize that you are expecting a huge leap in ability and production.

It's exciting that Woods played so well in the spring game, but why was he so much more dominant than the other guys who have been in the program? And was he successful because he's that amazing, or did playing against our offense have something to do with it?

I don't disagree that we have a lot of talent, but we did last year, too. And we were not a dominant defense last year. I hope we will be a dominant defense this year, but being a good but not spectacular defense seems most likely, doesn't it?

Oh, and we still have both of our co-defensive coordinators learning on the job. They are not experienced DCs and do not have a track record of defensive success like the big names in the business do. Again, they might be great this year, but there is nothing in their past coaching to base that on.

I'm normally a pretty pessimistic guy, and I am with the offense this year, but its objectively obvious this defense will be significantly better than last year. I mean I don't care what plays are called. Fundamentals are fundamentals regardless. When Peter Woods wins quit literally every single plaything against different OL and double teams, you can without a doubt say at the very least we didn't lose anything with Bresee leaving. I personally think his motor alone separates him to be ahead of Bresee. The fundamentals I saw in the secondary are better, much better, regardless of if they're 5'9" White guys or not. I don't care. Hips, being in position, no broken plays, driving on the ball, tackling, all of that is in context. I'm not saying they'll be Georgia's D two years ago, but we look to me like a top 10, probably top 5 type of Defense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're counting on a ton of development from guys

2

Apr 18, 2023, 10:53 AM

who either didn't play last year or who didn't perform at a consistently high level last year.

I hope it happens, I just think it's a lot to ask in such a short period of time.

Woods looks like a stud. I hope he's just that good, and wasn't looking like a superstar because our offensive line is bad.

Re: Question regarding Defense

All of the secondary this year > last year

P Woo this year > Bresee last year for obvious reasons

Woodazz Carter and Trotter > Simpson out of position

The only question is will Wes scheme aggressively in the manor of BV or will he sit back like a lot of last year?

Points should be a little easier to come by offensively possibly allowing a more aggressive approach defensively since one score shouldn’t seem like a mountain to climb.

I'm worried about our defensive ends and our #2 CB.

XT has to stay healthy because Mascoll isn't good. And we have no experience behind them. This is our weakest position group and typically they are responsible for generating pressure on QBs. This will likely be the worst DE rotation that we've had in over a decade. Just compare these guys to DEs we've had in the past. XT is the only one in the same category:

Da'Quan Bowers
Vic Beasley
Corey Crawford
Kevin Dodd
Shaq Lawson
Christian Wilkins
Clelin Ferrell
Austin Bryant
Myles Murhpy
KJ Henry

Nate Wiggins will be a true #1 lockdown CB. But who will be that #2 guy? Sheridan has never been that good. Toriano and Lukus have potential. Malcolm is more of a slot CB. But we still need someone to emerge across from Wiggins. We've always had two solid CBs in the past:

Andrew Booth and Mario Goodrich
AJ Terrell and Derion Kendrick
Trayvon Mullen and AJ Terrell
Ryan Carter and Trayvon Mullen
Mackensie Alexander and Cordrea Tankersley

We have the best LB duo with Carter and Trotter Jr, coupled with really talented depth behind them.

We have the best DT room in the country with Tyler, Ruke, Payton, Tre, and Woods.

We have a true lockdown #1 CB in Wiggins and experience after him.

We have a potential All-American safety in Mukuba coupled with veteran depth.

We have very few "ifs" with this defense, especially compared to most programs in the country. If you add all of those things up, this defense can be elite. Wes Goodwin will be in year 2 as a play-caller. One has to assume that he will be better and more comfortable in that role as well.
