Question re: DJ

It's obvious that he is not in a great place confidence wise right now. As we have all seen, he is not very good once his first option is unavailable. Have any of you looked at the ND gm from last year with that in mind ? Was it simply that his first option was open and he had better protection ? Or was he able to go to 2nd/3rd option and is just now struggling. That, and the fact that he now seems to throw from an open stance continually, are just puzzling, given the lights out performance last year.

All coaches study film. There was very little to watch last year because he had not played a lot. They now see the areas where his game is weak and attack it !
My question is .... why has our coaches not made changes?????

It's very clever of opposing defenses to let our WRs run free to expose DJ's weakness of his WRs dropping catchable balls.
Also clever to expose him for not being able to tell his OL who to block on stunts and blitzes.
Yes DJ has flaws, but to pretend the offensive product is about opposing coaches figuring out where DJ struggles is ignoring a lot of what's wrong with our offense as a whole.

I'm so confused by these comments about DJ's throwing mechanics and how they are "all of a sudden" flawed this season.
Take a look at some of DJ's high school film.
His mechanics are much better now, and his accuracy and touch are as well.
I can remember the first time I saw him play in high school and he started the game about 1 for 8 passing with 6 overthrows (either too hard or too high).
I was unhappy with Clemson's choice until DJ settled into the game and made some "wow" plays that made up for his inconsistency. I felt much better after seeing his potential and understood what the coaching staff thought they could do with him and why he was so highly rated.
Yes his performance has dropped from last season, but all of these people pretending he was a ready-made product when he stepped on campus are changing history to meet their bias.

You are objectively wrong. Compare his mechanics in camps/senior year/early last year to now. If you can't see the problems with his throwing motion that are new, I don't know what to tell you. You can't watch a single game in high school and because he overthrew passes, say he's better now.

Would you outline those mechanical problems for me?
His new problems are mostly mental and involve him second guessing his decisions as games go on. In high school, and to some extent last season, he cut it loose pretty freely with the appearance of a "we'll get em next time" attitude toward missed opportunities.
Of the things that most people complain about with DJ:
Being flat footed in the pocket is not new.
Turning head and body toward his primary target early in the route is not new.
Not turning head and body toward secondary target before throwing is not new.
Getting overly excited or trying to overpower the ball into tight windows are not new and cause most of his overthrows combined with a few mechanical issues that lend themselves to the ball staying high.

As I have posted often, his high school games were not a thing of beauty . He is not a great QB by any stretch of the imagination but he isn’t getting a lot of help either. Dropped passes are just hard to understand and out Stivers have had more than their share.

more film to study him and he didn’t have to play in packed stadiums last year because of covid. Maybe the crowd is affecting him. He seems really nervous.

I think it's a combination of things. DJ's mindset has been destroyed since UGA. He got hit hard a lot, and now he's like a racehorse that has become skittish. Also, his mechanics have degraded, which is something we've seen with every Clemson QB other than Deshaun whom Streeter coaches (shocking that the worst QB Clemson ever had might not be the guy to help NFL talent blossom). I think we also have a tremendous lack of speed at receiver, so they can't get separation and the scheme doesn't help. Also, he doesn't have a checkdown receiver to go to when those first couple options are covered like he did with Amari last year. All that together leads to his staring down receivers, willing something to happen.

Regarding ND last year

three things: ETN, Rogers and Powell.
No one on our roster right now touches those 3 guys who accounted for most of our offense in that game. I recall Rogers and Powell running wide open several times.
I love our young RB's and believe we are in great shape there, but this group of WR have performed worse than any group in recent memory. Add in DJ's accuracy issues and what we've seen is why we are where we are.
We have zero big play threats at WR

All it takes is 4-5 bad throws and 4-5 drops and 4-5 drives are destroyed. A team only gets so many drives per game.
