Question of Perception

Sep 1, 2022, 12:42 PM

Since yesterdays topic of halftime score and final score for this weeks game against GT, I have been doing some thinking and wanted to hear thoughts on two potential scenarios:

A.) Clemson wins the game 21-0.

B.) Clemson wins the game 42-21.

In your mind, which scenario would make you feel better about the future of the team this season? What would you be most concerned about with either scenario? I would obviously pick B as it would show some positive growth on offense and assume that the defense allowed scores due to a large influx of 2nd and 3rd string players contributing. Let me know your thoughts!

I wouldn't be happy with either of those scenarios other than getting a win.

21-0 would show me that our defense is as advertised but only scoring 21 in an opener against what should be a far inferior opponent would be disappointing.

42-21 would tell me we've fixed the offense a great deal but our defense isn't what we thought and defense is supposed to be our bread and butter this year.

I would like to see a score of say 45-10, 42-6 to show me we actually have improved offensively and our defense is stout into the 2 and 3 deep.

I truly would not be either, in reality I expect to see a game somewhere in the 35-3, 42-7 range if this team is truly going to climb back up to the mountaintop or near this season. Though, I do enjoy a good thought experiment.

I’d go with A.

If our D gives up 21 before half, that’s a problem.

Regardless of score, our O should be around 250 to 300 total yds by the half against these guys. I like yardage as a better predictor.

Both would be below my expectations, but given those as the only two choices I would far prefer 21-0.

A - it shows a dominant defensive performance and w/ 0 pts given up, you know the offense didn't have to show all their cards.

If we score 42 points I'll be exskagic as Mike Tyson says.***

A - a shut out is more impressive. It is hard to we have only had 1 against a D1 team since 2017, ##### 30-0 last year!

I would feel exactly the same either way. My view is just get the win. It's only one game, and the first game won't necessarily tell you much of significance about performance potential in the long run.

Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

Just win. That’s all that matters.
