Question for the rightwingers on this board
Apr 13, 2023, 3:15 PM

who have already dismissed the Clarence Thomas revelations out of hand as a complete non-story/hit piece. Would this bother you if a liberal judge was doing the same thing? This rabbit hole seems to keep going with Thomas. Why did he intentionally avoid disclosing this stuff over the past 20 years? He certainly can't claim ignorance of his duty to do so.

Imagine if one of the liberal judges was regularly vacationing with George Soros.
They'd flip out. And guess what: they'd be right to.
Some things are only forgivable if you're a total tribal partisan.

Admittedly I haven't vested much time into this, but I am curious to know if any litigation benefitting Crow has been presented to the USSC.
Right will defend conservative justices and legislators, just like the left will defend liberal justices and legislators. Seldom do we ever see both sides condemn the other. Each side makes excuses when their guy screws the pooch and point fingers to something some other guy did on the other side to deflect. We don't have a mature public anymore. It's my side is right, and your side are idiots regardless of the topic and it's maddening to see. The US is toast in my opinion we'll never have a respectable decorum between either political party going forward, the sides are too far apart. Time to look at Belize for a retirement location.

We need more legitimate political parties. At least one more but preferably two. But yeah, the political class may end up destroying us. That and the push towards divisions based on immutable chacteristics.

Perhaps he should have reported the sale, but from the article:
"The Crow company bought the properties for $133,363 from three co-owners — Thomas, his mother and the family of Thomas’ late brother..."
So $133K divided by at least three, and probably more, given that the 'family of Thomas' late brother' almost certainly includes nephews and / or nieces.
Pretty small potatoes seems to me, especially compared with the millions in crooked bucks the Bidens have received from China et al.

or whatever else, the conflict of interest, and the appearance, regardless of the circumstances, is bad. Period. I work with attorneys and judges and this is something they are VERY keen on avoiding. Many companies have cracked down on these types of things as well.
I've dined with judges before and they instructed me NOT to pay their tab, specifically because of this. I then told him not to worry because I wouldn't pay for his meal even if he asked me to. We both laughed. It is what it is.
Sorry, just looking at this through a professional and not political lens, it's VERY bad, and I promise Justice Thomas knows better.

Biden may have done something unethical or even downright illegal, but you have no proof of it, and resort to DOJ conspiracy theories. Thomas, on the other hand, actually failed to report things he is obligated by law to report, of which he was certainly aware. If it was innocuous, he would have reported it.
A federal disclosure law passed after Watergate requires justices and other officials to disclose the details of most real estate sales over $1,000. Thomas never disclosed his sale of the Savannah properties. That appears to be a violation of the law, four ethics law experts told ProPublica.
The disclosure form Thomas filed for that year also had a space to report the identity of the buyer in any private transaction, such as a real estate deal. That space is blank.

Seriously, you just posted that Biden MAY have done something wrong? You're at least three years behind the news cycle.
How about the border? How a quid pro quo in Ukraine? How about assaulting Tara Reid how about Chinese corruption as evidenced by Tony Bobulinski? Or making deals in Ukraine as reported by his stenographer just yesterday! Or classified docs in multiple locations. How about lying to Americans for at least FIVE years! And the Afghan Debacle!!
If I were you, I'd cease to say anything at all defending Biden.

this. The fact that Justice Thomas was treated to luxury vacations by a rich, like minded, personal friend of 25+ years in and of itself is not something I'm going to clutch my pearls over. But if you can give me the "tit-for-tat" that Justice Thomas was rewarded for such generosity from his personal friend - then I may be a bit more willing to listen.
I read the ProPublica article and I kept waiting for the "payoff" - it never came. They never provided, nor directly alleged any corruption on Crow or Thomas' part. Other than Justice Thomas having a personal friend that is extraordinarily wealthy, supports conservative causes, and routinely treats his friends (not just Justice Thomas) to these lavish vacations - crickets. Instead ProPublica wasted a lot of time, paragraph after paragraph, detailing Crow's conservative bona-fides as if that somehow made the man a criminal. They then cleverly weaved Crow's conservative leanings and personal generosity into the fact that Thomas didn't report these vacations to infer corruption - all without ever directly stating there was corruption involved.
The assurance that Thomas had a duty to report these vacations is not an established fact. Until recently the Justices had a "personal hospitality" exemption which I'm quite sure was being used by more than just Justice Thomas. Maybe ProPublica ought to dig into the rest of the court as well and they'll probably find quite a bit more of this going on than just Justice Thomas.
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-justices-clarence-thomas-are-ethics-police-rcna78520
Now that I've stuck to the topic - tell me - does it bother you how the Biden family has garnered so much wealth from their public positions - particularly from foreign "deals"? How about the Clinton's and their personal piggy bank - The Clinton Foundation? How about the 14 visits to the White House by Alexander Soros over the past year - does that not at least raise an eyebrow as to what that is all about?

along with Trump and his children using his office to advance their business interests (Chinese patents, billions from the Saudis, etc.), stealing from charities (that one will be hard to top), and more. Weird that you don't seem to mention those, even though they're the most recent.
Our political system is designed that way, and politicians of both (the 2 party system is garbage, btw) stripes leave office typically far wealthier than when they entered. It's a broken system. But as Tiggity pointed out, judges aren't politicians, and absolutely should be held to a different standard. And they pretty much always have been in this country. If your standard is "show me the exact case where SCJ Thomas voted directly to influence one of Harlan Crow's interests", then your ethics gauge needs some calibration, in my humble opinion. Judges at any level should not be accepting massive amounts of...anything, from anybody, whether cash, gifts, vacations, sweetheart real estate deals, whatever. The fact that you're excusing this should be alarming.
And to reiterate: IF, and WHEN, it is proven that Biden (the President) did something illegal when he was in office, then he can face the music just like everybody else should. But again, as I pointed out to T3, we're currently comparing speculation to fact as if they're the same thing.

Thomas has done something illegal (at most) and unethical (at a minimum). I'm simply pointing out that whether you or I like it or not - he apparently played within the rules established for the Justices via the "personal hospitality" exemption which was only recently changed.
Ask yourself a couple of questions:
1. Why isn't the Biden DOJ currently pursuing this? It ain't because they are friendly with Justice Thomas that is for sure. More than likely it is because they too know that Justice Thomas hasn't run afoul of any law or reporting requirements.
2. Why hasn't the SCOTUS put out a statement on this? Probably because the rest of the Justices (even the liberal ones) know that Thomas' activities were within the scope of their ethics at the time he took these vacations and they too have not reported similar activities based on their "personal hospitality" exemptions. Those who live in glass houses don't tend to throw stones and I'm betting that is why they have been deathly silent on this issue. Otherwise the SCOTUS could at least offer a disapproving statement of Thomas' behavior...
I agree with you that it is not a good look for any Judge to take free vacations even from their personal friends. But if Thomas didn't do anything illegal (no quid pro quo) and he was within the reporting rules established at the time - then what you have is a Justice doing something you personally don't like. That's OK - you are allowed to have an opinion. But that still doesn't make it unethical or illegal and something a lot of us are going to clutch our pearls over - especially since Justice Thomas has been the target of leftist smear campaigns since his confirmation hearing over 30 years ago.

Without passing judgment on Thomas, there is rank corruption throughout all of DC. Why do leftists save up all of their feigned outrage for the most prominent black conservative in the country? Why don't you just put on your hood and hang out in his front yard? Your reasons for hating him couldn't be more transparent.

So, the Treasury has turned the SARs over to Comer.

Will he be in on the conspiracy too when he fails to find proof that Joe Biden profited from deals his scumbag son and associates were making? I’m pretty sure those would be out in the Twitterverse by now if they existed. Anyway, keep those fingers crossed. Indictments are imminent, and when they don’t happen, well, “Deep State!”

Until offered a better option, I'll stick with the crooks who I feel benefit me most.
Is that what you're looking for? Because that's how I feel.

Just as Trump’s actions would’ve bothered them if it were a Democrat president.
Likewise, Biden’s actions with the Hunter stuff and money disappearing would bother Democrats if it were a Republican president.
Partisan politics as usual.
