Question for Joe21 — or others

Sep 15, 2021, 1:48 PM

There is a post about the GT rivalry on here and got to thinking about the big rivals during each decade (not counting the cluckers from Columbia.). While a rival is always a rival to some extent, the “hate” for a certain team certainly comes and goes over time.

From what I’ve read and know, GT was probably the biggest rival after UofSC during the early years. When the dominated us (way back when) I wonder if GT felt about us like we do about them now (ie it’s pretty much a game we’re going to win.)

figured Joe could give us his thoughts on with whom and when was the “next biggest rival.” I feel the 80s was certainly UGa. NCSU and to lesser extent, Maryland were big in 70s I think. Always thought both of them were just nasty teams!

So what other teams came and went over the years? GT probably “recycled” a few times. BC tried. Could argue Ohio St and Bama now. When did FSU rise up?

FSU rose up when we fired Danny and had infighting within the fan base such that we literally let FSU waltz in to the ACC and be dominant for 10 years. FSU had great timing but we brought that era on ourselves.

Oops that sounds like what we are doing now with politics! but I'll stick with just thinking about the Tigers!

Mid to late '60s Gt was the only road game I went to as a student other than Carolina (once was enough for both) but the biggest rival was whichever team was the biggest challenge within the conference. NC State was big the year of the "White Shoes" defense- crowd went wild when Wayne Mass pranced off the field with blood all over his uniform while pointing across the field to let everybody know it was from State's All American DT. Maryland rose up a couple of years after that. UNC stole a couple of games that replay would've overturned so I still hold a grudge.

Md has always seemed to be either really good or really bad. They seldom were middling.

I really don't recall many long term rivalries over the yeas. Of course there was our regular dominance of the Gamecocks and our annual trip to Atlanta where we lost to the Yellow Jackets.

Joe, I hope you realize that you scared the crap out of all of us when your poast went incoherent and ended abruptly yesterday. I'm so glad everything is ok. I would have been rushing over to my 92 year old dad's house had he done that.
