Question for coaches/anyone about the Defense

Sep 24, 2022, 4:27 PM

Did Goodwin moving the safety’s back in a zone or cover 2 force wake to run more? If so, that won the game late. And another question, if that’s what happened, why didn’t he move to it earlier knowing the secondary was depleted and inexperienced? That game would have looked more like 2020 if we were healthy on the back side of the D. Very glad I can sit here and watch games the rest of the day in peace.

Three starting DBs out for the game ... nuff said.

We were somewhat helpless back there with a high-quality QB/WR corps on the other side.

We did enough to win. But we need our guys back on the field next week.

If you have 3 DB’s out, then why did he leave them on an island all by themselves most of the game….. that was stupid

Because when he didn’t, they ran it for 7 yards a play. We figured out a way to get it done late, and mainly because the front 4 finally got enough disruption.
Their last drive in regulation, running it for 6 yards a pop and running clock, almost killed us. One more first down and they had a FG kick.

We stuffed the run ... we won the game ... we had to

make a compromise given our personnel.

Winning the game against a ranked opponent on the road.

We did what we needed to do.

Right…. the compromise was way way to late…almost lost because of it. Maybe the Goodwin hire will work out, but he seems like a slow learner so far.

We took the run away from the opening snap ...

Sep 24, 2022, 6:52 PM

Hartman and his receivers are da.mn good!

There was not a lot Wes could do to make raw true freshmen corners better in one on one coverage.

Yes they are! Best receivers in the conference maybe? Although I hope our guys have something to say about that later on. But my point and question is why wait til near death to adjust and save the day?

Yes to the first question. I don't know to the second.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

short answer… WG did the same thing BV did

Sep 24, 2022, 4:36 PM

BV was absolutely known for playing a lot of man to man and stopping the run. He would dare teams to beat us by essentially saying “you can’t make enough plays against tight man to do it”.

Hartman made the plays.

But to suggest that is a new look from us is absolutely ridiculous. BV made his money forcing teams to do that.

Yes, it did. I think the DBs got more and more frustrated and their play deteriorated further. Yes, he made some changes in 3rd, but also messed up coverage. It was a bad matchup for new DBs, and a really good QB and wides.

I’m just a fan but agree with u…

Sep 24, 2022, 4:53 PM

…the change to 2 safeties changed the WF approach, and was desperately needed. I think it came so late because we were confident that our d line would take over the game, but it never happened.

I wonder why this adjustment wasn’t made after Wake moved ahead and they were getting large gains or PI calls. I don’t understand why he even thought true freshman and backups could deal with a QB like that with their WR room as good as it is. It almost cost the team the whole season. Having Makumba, Jones and Greene back will be much needed. I could be wrong but I think Wake is better than State. Doubt it will be much tougher than Hartman and those WRs again for a while.
