Question about signal stealing (especially for buckeye fans)

Dec 30, 2020, 4:41 AM

Isn’t that part of film breakdown? Isn’t that part of the game? First and foremost I believe There is absolutely nothing wrong with studying game film and learning your opponents tendencies in different situations even it is based on what kind of hand gestures the sidelines are showing. That belief there alone is why no coach in America will ever get in trouble “stealing signals”.

Week in and week out teams across the country have 3 or 4 different guys on the sidelines that show signals, but only one is relevant. Even some offensive coaches choose to call the play in by selecting a random player from the offensive unit to bring to the huddle. Paul Johnson and Will Mischamp did this ever single play. Did it ever occur to you that these guys probably just suck at coaching? This is probably why they are no longer employed right?

There are a couple of factors in the conspiracy of “signal stealing” that most people don’t realize when the opposing team start to accuse the other team of “stealing signals”.
1. The talent gap between positions from the offensive positions to the defensive positions are glaringly obvious.

2. The defensive player not only has to be talented, but smart enough to recognize the tendency that they have discovered in game film

3. It’s up to the offense to keep the plays more of a secret and to protect/evolve their scheme.

4. If signal stealing was that much of a thing then why can’t more coaches besides Brent Venables and Dabo Swinney do it?

5. If schools pay you millions of dollars as a defensive coordinator to break down game film, learn offensive tendencies and train your talent how to react to the opposition’s offense, would you not be doing your job if you did not do these things and you weren’t successful at it?

5. For the people who think that signal stealing is a real crime in football, there is only one noun that describes your position...Cry babies!

No coach in America will ever get in trouble for doing this because these factors stated above are relevant and are viewed by rule making committees in the same light.

So quit your crying bucknuts! All you are doing when you throw out these accusations is making it appear to others as if you are already giving excuses for losing! It’s just weak!

Are we stealing "signals" or are we diagnosing tendencies and tells?

We've got a staff full of coaches who do film work as analysts, and teams have dozens of different tells - that don't involve their signals, which we may or may not be stealing - that let somebody who's done a thorough enough film study figure out what they're up to. I suspect what we're really reading is that tackle who likes to cheat a couple steps off the line in his set when it's a pass play because he knows he's got slow feet, or a guard who drops his butt to help him get into his pass-pro stance faster, or that disinterested RB who isn't reading the DL alignment because he knows he's not going to be looking for a hole in about three seconds - all of which would broadcast "pass". Those kind of things all tell somebody who's paying attention what they're up to, and a lot of times teams themselves don't even realize they themselves are doing it.

My suspicion is our big edge is actually the film room a lot more than a secret army of gnomes creeping around the stadium doing illicit recon.

Q,

If that is the case, it would be nice if we stood up and said that we do not work on stealing signs.

Stealing signs is wrong. It is cheating.

Coaches that complain about the other team stealing their signals come across as weak and desperate. Day is already building an excuse for when he gets his rear end handed to him on Friday. Notre Dame made the accusation against Clemson, played with wristbands, and still got their butts kicked. Sometimes the other team is just better. Maybe Day and Kelly can go to counseling together. Or better yet, pick another profession if they cannot play with the big boys.

Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. Stealing signs in baseball will get you suspended so don’t pretend it’s ok.

True in baseball. But that is still to the OP’s point. ‘WHY’ is - or should it be - ‘illegal’?

Whatever choice(s) you make makes you. Choose wisely.

Do you think any team can rely of signals to tell them how to defend the next play? Would opposing coaches be stupid as not to deploy fake signs so Clemson is defending a run and the O is throwing the long ball?

Perhaps CBV is better at film review so he recognizes formation, down/distance, stage of the game, etc to guess what the O will run? Perhaps he has a sixth sense like Romo to guess he next play based on all the known factors? Perhaps the other team should do more self scouting?

So, what's the yardage penalty when the referee calls a foul on the defense for 'Stealing Signals'?... It's been so long I've forgotten...

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Probably just running copycat plays that other teams ran....

Baseball is not football and is also not basketball. If you are that concerned with someone stealing signals, use different methods of delivery each game.

Targeting is illegal but Bama has players ejected or should be ejected every single game. Don’t come here with that bs

What difference does it make that the O-whine-O State coach thinks Venables steals signals? He is going to whine about something. He has for a solid year. I just hope our Tigers beat the brakes off the bucknuts. It won’t shut them up but it will be a great source of joy to me to hear them make excuses yet again. Go Tigers!!!!

You show your total ignorance of the game when you complain about signal stealing.it isn’t against the rules unless it is electronically based.

I know someone proudly involved in the sign stealing. I’ve also been told that we have drones looking down on the opposing coaching staff and players. That allows us to listen in on conversations. The only way to prevent our eavesdropping is to wear large sombrero type hats made of tin foil with large rims. Those have been shown to be 100% effective. I hope OSU doesn’t read my post.
