Proposal for OT in NFL

Jan 24, 2022, 9:38 AM

Change to “If first team to possess scores a TD and Two point conversion, they win. Otherwise the other team gets a possession.

I want to see a field position auction

Teams can bid yardage until one concedes and let's the other have the ball.

I bet the Chiefs would've still taken the ball at their own 10 last night. Would've been fun to see just how deep in their own territory the two teams would've been willing to start in order to get the ball first.

Both teams have earned the right to touch the ball. Having a coin toss weigh that much in the outcomr is not right....if Buffalo would have said "heads" yesterday we have had a different outcome.

The NFL needs to copy the NCAAF rules for OT. Its not perfect, but its much better than the current process.

Both teams do touch the ball. If the kicking team doesn’t think they can stop the other from scoring a TD, they can always try an onside kick.

whenever there's an OT game in the NFL. "How is it fair that one team can win without the other team getting the ball?!"

I told her that whoever wins the coin toss in the Chiefs/Bills game would win the game.

They do need to rethink the rule somehow...

Give each team one possession at their own 35 to drive the field. After that, just go to alternating 2-point conversions, soccer-shootout-style. The the ONLY thing a coin flip does it tell the second team whether they have to get a TD or FG.

I think a free kick off would be better. Start at the 15. Snapped holder and a kicker. Back out 10 yards per kick. First team to miss loses.

I can understand the current rule during the regular season. The college rule can sometimes have games going on for several overtimes which creates further risk for injury. However, I don't see why they can't have a separate rule for the postseason. Have a similar rule as college except have each team get the ball after a normal kickoff. If the 1st team scores a touchdown then they kick off to the other team who has to score a touchdown of their own to keep the game going.

From there I have mixed feeling on what I'd have them do if the 2nd team scores a touchdown to tie the game. Part of me wants to say it would be sudden death from that point forward but that does still give an advantage to whichever team wins the coin toss so part of me wants to say each team continues to get equal positions until there's no longer a tie.

No matter what, the game shouldn't be decided on a coin toss. I know there's something to be said for a defense having a chance to make a stop, but that's easy to say whenever only one defense is tasked with needing to make that stop. Had the coin toss gone the other way yesterday I would've been shocked to see the Bills not score a touchdown to win the game.

Do it like Futbal

25 yards, FG for each team, move it back 5, move it back 5 and so on until the first miss.

The NFL rules are ridiculous; a coin flip won that game

Makes them keep the same 11 players on the field for the whole thing. Pick which eleven you want. You could either gear for defending the kick or blocking the kick, but no swap outs.
