Prof. Jack McCormac

May 18, 2021, 4:14 PM

A few weeks ago I posted that Prof. McCormac had Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He began treatments and after two infusions decided against further treatment. I went to see him today and it is obvious that the cancer has taken a toll on his physical well-being. One of his daughters is there with him and she reported that he has received cards and well wished from many of his former students.

If any of you former students of Prof. McCormac are so inclined, a card or short note would probably be a fitting tribute to an outstanding professor. His address---Mr. Jack McCormac, 98 Crestwood Drive, Clemson, SC 29631.

What an outstanding professor (and person) ..... the only reason I got through Strength of Materials. One of the few engineering professors that didn't hate architecture students. I certainly will keep him and his family in my prayers.

Best professor I ever had. EVER. The man was incredible. Had a knack for explaining engineering concepts where you could easily understand them. Also wrote the absolute best text books. I still have all of the textbooks I used that he wrote. I hate to hear of his health troubles.
May God bless him and his family.

Surveying textbook

As a forestry student; I took surveying under Dr. McCormac. Great course and great instructor. Remember well the hands on instruction on the band practice field with those old transits. And I actually pulled out the textbook last month as a reference for a question I had. Such a classic textbook. God Bless You Professor.

I'll give you my favorite Happy Jack story.

Near the end of my Senior year I took the EIT (Engineer in Training) exam. I found it pretty easy, thanks to my Civil Engineering professors from CU! Everything came easy except the last 5 questions which were all related. I spent an enormous amount of time on those 5 extremely complex questions and had no clue of the answers. I actually wrote down the problems on a sheet of scrap paper and took them from the test. After talking with several other student, none of us had a clue how to do the problems. There was only one thing to do. We headed to Happy Jack's office Monday after lunch.

When we got to the door Professor McCormac was on the phone. He motioned me to come in. After a minute of listening to his end of the conversation, I realized he was consulting with an Engineering firm in California. As he was talking on the phone, he saw I had a paper in my hand. He motioned for me to hand it to him. He put it on his desk and while still talking on the phone began writing and solving equations. Within a minute or so, he had the answers to all 5 questions while continuously discussing another problem on the phone. He handed me the paper, smiled and waved good-bye as I turned, stunned and walked out the door to the guys in the hall who were all standing there with their mouths open.

This was one of many times he amazed us.
