Made a set of Clemson Football Cards for my son

Aug 20, 2015, 3:32 PM
1.jpg(664.0 K)

I have a six year old son who recently got into football cards. He has always loved Clemson (I am an '04 graduate and my wife is in the Athletic Hall of Fame), so I decided to make him a set of current Clemson players. With Fan Day right around the corner, I thought the timing was right.

I used the roster from clemsontigers.com and made a card for everybody on the roster and all the coaches (plus a few others). It ended up being a 126 card set and I thought you guys may want to check it out.

I attached a sample and a few of the other pages can be seen by clicking the link.

If you want to see a specific players card let me know and I can post it!

Can you give us instructions on how to make them

Aug 20, 2015, 6:37 PM

I think people would buy them from you, but I'm sure there is some sort of copyright infringement there

Re: Can you give us instructions on how to make them

Aug 20, 2015, 7:31 PM

I could, but you need some pretty specific equipment to make it all happen. I have access to a production quality printer that will print on really heavy weight paper and also an industrial cutter. Without that stuff your life will be a lot harder. Also, you would need some Photoshop skill...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What weight paper did you use?

Aug 21, 2015, 3:10 PM

Real trading cards are a very heavy stock. that printer you used doesnt look like it would print on trading card stock.

Re: What weight paper did you use?

Aug 21, 2015, 10:57 PM

The paper I used is plenty heavy. It is 155 lb with a gsm of around 275. If anything, it may feel a little too thick.

As far as the printer goes... It will be just fine. It is a $30,000-40,000 production machine and will print on almost anything you can throw at it.

This is the coolest thing ever!

Thanks for all the kind words!

Here are a few photos showing some of the process.

1. After everything was designed in Photoshop it was sent to the print server.

2. Then the spreads of 9 cards were printed on a production quality printer.

3. Then the cards were cut up with a press style cutter (one of my favorite things ever!).

This has been a really fun project!

Could you redo the spurrier pic with the gamecock emblem in place of the PAW? It would be put to good use on Twitter!

Aug 21, 2015, 3:13 PM

Ha, I wish that was the case. Just did this stuff in spare minutes I had. I am a graphic designer so this kind of thing comes pretty easily to me.

It took work, but was all worth it when my kid saw the set.

Update from Fan Day

Aug 24, 2015, 11:52 AM

The cards were a hit! All the players were pumped to see their cards and of course all wanted some. We got almost everyone to sign and met a few friends along the way!
