Creativity & Innovation! Last night, Clemson ran 12/21/22 personnel & out of a pro-set under center

Nov 28, 2021, 11:45 AM

That’s a first since the chad Morris era. Clemson has been strictly 11 personnel (one TE and one RB), except for certain circumstances eg on the goal line or short yardage.

Last night, there were heavy 2 RB sets, 2 TE sets, and sometimes 2 RB and 2 TE. I think this diversity along with the occasional under center look can be the offensive analog to BVs defense. BV is a challenge because (in part) he gives the O a lot of different looks throughout the game. Similarly, if the O adopts this approach with more 12/21/22 personnel... it could be the beginning of a new era that stresses defenses and gives the O more answers based on match ups. For example, Shipleys TD was under center in the pro-set. Kobe paces run was out of 12 personnel. Both explosive runs were out of new sets that emerged during this season.

It has been a subtle evolution over the last couple of weeks but I think it could have a huge impact given an off-season to fully incorporate. Let’s give credit where it is due!

Also, this could provide favorable matchups with the WRs on the outside as teams stack the box to match the personnel. With the additional pass protection, it could lead to longer developing plays downfield in the passing game. Add in QB development (or a new QB), and this could be electric to watch in the bowl game and next season.

We had some chances downfield. Our receivers need to spend the offseason like Mike Williams did when he trained (I believe) with some basketball rebounding principles focused on being more physical and high-pointing the ball.
Both Collins could use some work like that, along with some good muscle weight.

Imagine a lot of the multiple RB and TE sets were mostly due to lack of WR depth due to injury but agree it was a great approach.

Agreed but it has surprisingly opened up the offense a bit more in that we can commit to the run. In the past, that was not as readily available. More personnel groupings and sets could just help keep defenses off balance. 11-personnel all game / every game, I think let defenses hone-in a bit.

Everything was fairly well except the 4th and half yard pass just to try and draw them offsides instead of running it down their throat. Those are the kind of bailouts the costs are use too

Yea - I’d like to hear the coaches thoughts but I imagine that is a judgement call from the center ie if he feels the D jumped offsides he snaps it to get the ‘free play’. I’d imagine there was another call actually called on that one. Wish we wouldn’t have gotten cute, though, and just ran the play. They weren’t going to stop the run.

Dabo loves that play at least once a year. I thought it was just letting the guys have fun. By that point, we knew SC wasn't going to mount any serious challenge. That's just my opinion any way.

Sure, but to do it on 4th and short was a bit to risky. 1st or 2nd down I could see it. Dabo did say they outsmarted themselves and should've kept it simple.

I have no basis for this but the more I thought about it

Nov 29, 2021, 10:14 AM [ in reply to Re: Creativity ]

the more I wondered if it wasn't a standard response for when they think there is an offsides penalty coming. Maybe the coaches tell the offense in fall camp, "if there is ever an offsides, run this play." As opposed to what another poster said about it being a decision made by the center.

I don't like that the OL doesn't move. Wish they would make some effort to block. It's kinda like that play on defense a few years back when no one rushed.

I just don't understand why it took so long. I know going in, we thought QB and WR was our strength but after the uga game, the SC state game, and certainly after the ga tech game, everyone knew that wasn't the case.

I'd go so far as to say it was exposed some in spring game, and fall camp the coaches had to see it. I know some of you mentioned it, especially after the NC State game.

Great post. Appreciate it.

Thanks! I just felt like it was worth pointing out some significant structural changes that seem to be correlated with recent success. I’m hoping they can build on it moving forward and don’t just slip back to the old foundation.

pro-set under center

Nov 28, 2021, 12:52 PM

Agree with ClemGal ~ Appreciate this post!

I wondered if anyone would bring it up! A Clemson QB "under center"! I mean, if teams want to do the "it's Clemson drop 8 defense" we need to be able to make them pay for it!

Under center gives our recruiting time to show itself in most games as well! I.E. especially in the ACC most teams can't put out enough DB's to stop all the speed/athleticism we can put out as pass catchers. In the spread; they just drop 8 and if we do an inside handoff just rally up! Under center, you might get a play where you are devastated from a numbers point of view and are 7-8 yards down field before you can get to the ball carrier.
It's an evolution that has to happen if teams are going to play us how they have been. I hope to see a lot more of it. I think a set with Galloway and Allen or Allen and Lay would be great! Who are teams going to focus on stopping? Which if they double team with a safety - it leaves one of the Collins WR's with a one on one! Or EJ when he returns with a 1 on 1. It has the potential to be devastating with our personnel. Still need to focus on OL recruiting - but playing this style might just help in that category as teams can't "negative recruit"! Basically, tell kids that the way we play won't get you ready for the NFL because our offense is gimmicky.
Up Tempo - under center - a pro-style offense with RPO action built-in!

Even if teams have to prep for it, it complicates preparation. All wins!

Exactly! The more likely everyone "didn't get the memo" the more you can do on offense! Being multiple also means you can adapt( as you already said ) your game-plan around the opponent's weak spots you feel you have a favorable matchup at.
From a developmental point of view - having kids learn a little bit of 5 and 7 step drops can't be a bad thing either!
The most effective offenses are the ones that are a bit ahead of what defenses are teaching! When Oregon and Auburn were killing people with up-tempo. Mike Leach, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State with the Air Raid. You have to be ahead of things just enough "so that the technique the defense is taught is used against them"!
Still no matter what system you install - it still comes down to blocking, tackling and execution in a disciplined way!

Dabo and company still have that gleam where they want to go get it. I am excited for Tigers football as it evolves this offense.

Great read an observation guys to get back in the elite category our QB play has to be much better and we finally need our oline to be at least good But we need a QB that can play and spin it along with this ground game and we are back.
