Pressure

Nov 16, 2021, 12:24 PM

I have a 6’3” 240lb younger brother with very large hands. He can hit a 1-iron 300 yds. And he can hit his driver even further on the driving range.

But when it comes to hitting his “woods” off the teebox, no can do. He tenses up and slices, hooks or tops the ball consistently. This has been the case for 20 years.

My point is practice and the game are different. Sometimes it takes a new approach or new circumstance to remove the stressors. In our starting QB’s case, missing the layups just like missing foul shots is the norm - whether it’s mechanical or in his mind. A new coach or a new location could be a win-win. Great kid. Possibly the wrong fit, and no doubt the shoes he had to fill were way too big.

Leadership is another factor. Introverts can struggle with leadership. C. Klubnik arrives with a clean slate, outstanding mobility, and undeniable leadership qualities.

How many of you remember the 2018 Spring game when Dabo was calling back TL16 TD bombs and KB2 could not hit short passes? The pressure is about to ramp up in Tiger Town, and the team, the players and the coaches will all benefit as a result.

I want DJ to be successful. All indications are that he’s a good kid and someone you want to root for.

Unfortunately for everyone involved, I don’t think he will find success here at Clemson. You did a great job of outlining the situation so I won’t retread on that. I will add that if he transfers I would still like to see some accountability from the coaching staff on what happened at QB this year (not just the starter). If the argument was that TP was worse than what we have seen from DJ, no one has been coaching QBs.

Well it certainly seems like TP didn't get developed between April and August.

I would like some serious answers for that whether DJ stays or not!!!!!

This is a very interesting topic.

You clearly must have heard the announcer use the term "layups" 50 times during the game on Saturday.

I'm guessing you also heard him gloss over the couple of dropped layups and harp on the ones DJ missed.

Did you notice the layups where the young WRs didn't break off the route like they were supposed to and the missed "layup" was because the "goal" was in the wrong place? I don't know all of the routes, but when a guy runs a 12 yard stop route on 3rd and 6 and DJ throws the ball out of bounds at 7 yards then you know who messed up.

I also found several comments very interesting while watching the Manning broadcast of Monday night football last night.

One was a play where Cooper Kupp dropped a "layup". Peyton said the ball wasn't thrown perfectly but it's a play that a good WR like Kupp will tell you he should catch no matter where the ball was thrown. He said Kupp is the type of guy that subscribes to the thought that if my hand touches it, I should catch it.

The Manning's also discussed a stat the NFL keeps called something like "off-target throws".

Peyton especially said he couldn't stand it because whoever is watching a screen and assuming that every throw is meant to hit the WRs in the chest is often wrong.

He said QBs are constantly having to make "off-target" throws behind WRs or at their knees and that sort of thing to protect guys or keep the ball away from defensive players.

I have noticed people all season commenting on DJ throwing balls that are constantly "off-target".

DJ clearly just misses some balls for sure, but I feel there are many times when he throws the ball to the correct spot and people (mostly announcers) comment about how the ball wasn't in the perfect spot for a catch to be made.

In the past guys like Lawrence and Watson got the benefit of the doubt on passes like that because viewers assumed passes were placed correctly because those guys were viewed as accurate passers.

The fact that DJ is correctly viewed as an inaccurate passer causes people to assume that every throw he makes that isn't caught must be his fault in some way.

You appear to fall into that group.

Good Post O

Agree that DJ does not get the benefit of the doubt that superstars DW4 and TL16 routinely received. I especially like you sharing the Peyton comments about ball placement - DW4 and J. Leggett excelled at throwing and catching the low ball - in fact, Leggett rarely caught a ball standing up. But these plays helped us beat Bama and other tough D’s.
