COLUMBIA, S.C. -
Police say an 18-year-old University of South Carolina student shot in Columbia's bar and entertainment district was an innocent bystander.
Investigators said 20-year-old Michael Juan Smith was arrested shortly after the shooting around 2:30 a.m. Sunday and was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
Police say Smith and another man were arguing when Smith fired his gun. Police say Smith missed his target, but hit the woman who was in front of a pizza restaurant with a group of friends. She has not been identified, and remains in the hospital in critical condition.
The shooting happened in the Five Points area, which is near the University of South Carolina's campus.
Smith is in jail without bond. It wasn't known if he had a lawyer.

Just critical condition. The State says she might be paralyzed though. Horrific regardless...

One of my friends was actually standing beside the girl when she got shot. He chased the shooter down. Such a sad thing that happened. He says that the shooter got in a fight with two other guys, got scared, and shot into a crowd without looking. Prayers for the family.

No idiots with guns and bullets do. Guns don't fire themselves. I hope they kill that effing #######. So tired of all these dumb ##### pulling guns when they don't get their way. This is just a horrible story from top to bottom. There's really no excuse for something like this to happen.

Just to clarify I was stressing the idiot with the gun was the problem not the guns and bullets. I fully support packing heat and shooting thugs.

It will be interesting to see how South Carolina graduates and the "leadership" in Columbia explain this one.

Martha is my bestfriends cousin and she is not dead but she has a long tough road ahead of her, the bullet went through her liver and struck her spine, she comes from a great family and they will get through it. Pray for her and the family during this time as paralysis is what it looks like for her.
