Practically every football story I see, and post on here

that I see concerning defense, says we will "play faster" and "get the defensive calls in sooner". From all this, I can only intuit one thing. Coach Venables, knowing how intense he is, and how hard a worker he is, had gotten our defense to a point where it was almost over complicated. Not on purpose, of course, but the tendency would automatically be to try and "add a new wrinkle" or two every new season. And, after as many seasons as Jimmy Greenbeans had been here, that's a lot of wrinkles. Same thing could also have been true on the offensive side of things. Kind of like "Paralysis by Analysis", if you will. Athletes in any sport perform at their best when they aren't thinking much, just letting themselves naturally do what their bodies are capable of doing. You will hear them call it "being in the zone."
So, if things had in fact gotten so wrinkly that thought was slowing down action, and the new pairs of eyes now in charge on both sides of the ball do, in fact, simplify things, then all these moves may wind up being a win-win blessing for everyone. And, when you get right down to it, that is what you hope for when promotions are made, that everybody wins. Good luck to Brent and Tony in their new jobs in Norman and Charlottesville, and Good luck to Wes and Brandon here in Tigertown. Here's hoping everybody wins, except of course, Clemson must win if we play each other!

Talking to an OSU fan and he was talking about their coaching staff adjusting to Venables late calls. We had a couple of games during his tenure where the D did look confused the last being the OSU game we lost. Not sure what they did to disguise the offensive call but it had Venables on his heels.

Perhaps. All I know is that we were second best at ppg allowed- 14.8. And this number includes 4 tds not given up by the D. If Venables' system was becoming too complicated, our players were doing a great job of hiding their confusion.

the Bucknuts last time out, there WERE starting to be times when Coach V was getting confused enough by something that the calls were not coming in on time. Now, it may be that the other guys figured out something to confuse him, or, he had too many options to pick one, but, either way, it was noticeable.
I say all these things in no way to disparage what Coach Venables accomplished here. He did a FANTASTIC job. But, college, AND professional football are the same in one regard. If things keep getting done in the same manner, someone, somewhere will eventually figure out a way to defeat that system. I am just saying that we may have been seeing the start of that at the end of BV's time at Clemson.
I use the Triple Option as an offensive example. For YEARS, that offense ruled college football. But, how many big time teams do you see employing the Triple Option as their primary offense today? None. Defensive athletes got big and fast enough, and coaches developed a defensive system that was disciplined enough when everybody played their assignment, to eventually stop it.
A fancy way of saying, "what goes around, comes around", I guess. Somewhere down the road, the Triple Option may make a comeback.

Yes, OSU and LSU burned us. Credit to them. Of course, both of them burned many teams in those two seasons. I think we recruit defense so well now that any decent D Coordinator should be able to figure out most offenses. CBV, CDS, and now CWG and CNE deserve huge kudos for their ability to attract great young talent to Clemson, develop them, and execute during the game. The stinkers are few and far between.

1. I have to say; this thread is enjoyable to this point. I like both of your takes and agree with both of you.
I too have "read the tea leaves" from the comments to mean, "less complication and more aggressiveness"! Which could mean great things! But, as mentioned also, we seemed to be doing a good job with the complexity of the defense.
With Wes's knowledge of tendencies and habits using his incredible memory - I think much of the installation will be coached up during the week leading up to the game. The players will just have to lean on their coaching and trust it. Wes is said to have the ability to recognize down and distances from double-digit years ago in what most would call "obscure games"! Meaning not a big game and not a big moment in the game. This means coordinators who have been there or even who have been at other stops along the way will have a video trail this man can dissect and figure out.
I can't wait to see it. And with the speed of the LB group in particular; even if we play the percentages and are wrong - they have the speed to recover and "make it right"!
Excited to see it.

Has anyone thought that the delay in getting the defensive set called in was the time it took for Goodwin to call it down to Coach V and him to signal it into the team?

That's exactly what it was! And BV knowing; "I know exactly how I want to attack it"!
I think opponents started picking up on it and the more talented teams were able to exploit it from time to time(still not consistently though).
Hopefully, the speed we have on defense makes up for the play call not being 100% perfect! Hopefully, with Wes's ability to prepare the team leading up to the game the players recall of that prep plus their natural ability will be enough to still be DOMINANT!

Let’s hope the wheels don’t fall off. Same thing with Streeter. Replacing two guys other D1 schools respected enough to turn over their programs over to.

HaHaHa! Me too!
I'm like; they could just run a power play and get 5 yards before ya'll know it right now! It's hard to argue with Coach V's success though. But, yeah, I certainly did the same thing toward my "poor innocent TV that didn't know why I was yelling at it" LOL!
