I base elite on the current status of a program based on recent history.
The elite teams are, in no particular order: Clemson, Bama, UGA, Ohio State
Some teams that used to be elite but are not today: FSU, Miami, Oklahoma, Texas
Elite is very subjective. For me it takes 5 or 6 years where the team is considered on the short list of favorites for the national championship in August and 3 or 4 of those years are still on the short list on Thanksgiving.

At this point it’s clear - if you are a regular participant in the CFP, you are definitely elite. If you are amongst the first two out of the final four, you may be elite or on the brink of it.
Clemson had been an elite program for six years prior to last season. That performance is obviously elite. Last year we slipped so far that it’s almost inexplicable, although clearly the difference was the utter loss of offensive firepower. Injuries also added to last season’s cliff dive from elite to average.
The immensity of Dabo’s contract extension indicates that Clemson nation is confident that he can take us back to elite. I believe he can, but he may be forced to modify his preferred hiring practices for assistant coaches to get there.

They proclaim which teams are elite and the public, fools who believe everything ESPiN publishes join the chorus.
They've been putting Texas, USCw, Michigan, Auburn, Florida and TN in the top 25 preseaon polls for over a decade. They say it and the AP voters fight over who agrees the most. Much of the times these teams fall from top 10 preseason to unranked in the end.
Of course we are elite. As you say, we've been an elite team for many years now.

I said that we were elite up until last year. The extreme drop off last year removed us from that status. Elite teams don't lose to those crappy NC State and Pitt teams... and they don't struggle to beat horrible teams like GT and BC on last second prayers, either.
Clearly at this point, from game one of the 2021 season to now, we are NOT elite. That's clear to anyone who is watching and understands what they are seeing. Dabo has a HUGE job ahead of him and a lot of it involves getting crucial players healthy in our secondary and DL.

I think that's slightly too extreme, but the definition of elite is "the best of a class." Elite implies you are presently at the very pinnacle of your area. Top 3% isn't outrageous. Me, I think Clemson has to win the ACC, especially with how terrible the ACC is.

That’s why I was asking for clarity. Playoffs is top 3%. His wording makes it sound like Clemson is not currently elite but would be if they make it to the playoffs. I for one think “elite” is broader than one previous season. If you are only elite when you make the playoffs then you’re really only elite for a few weeks. If playoffs is the determinate why are you elite the next season? Cincinnati isn’t elite and I would think it a stretch to say they were elite last year. Unless you just want to substitute the word for “in the playoffs right now.” Given how malleable the concept is, why would any Clemson fan choose a reasonable definition that excludes them?

If we make the playoff, or we just miss it and are in the discussion, or unless we don't make it, but there is an argument that we should have been there. If it's obvious that we didn't deserve it, then we haven't been elite for 2 years. It's that simple. There are only about maybe up to 6 elite teams each year max. The rest are not elite. They might be good, but not elite.
