Plyler's Blog: Retired Jerseys or Numbers?

Retired Jerseys or Numbers?

Retired Jerseys or Numbers?
I am big New York Yankee fan, so I learned very early on as a kid the significance of retired numbers. I have toured Monument Park in Yankee Stadium and respect the history of the organization and the game. But the Yankees are running out of numbers, especially

having anynumber they want once they earn it. I dont like someone who has never played a down thinking they are "entitled" to a certain number because of their high school history. Oh that's old fashed and wont fly today but we all know that is how it should be. Earn it. Get it as an upperclassman

To me, it should be about the meaning of the number more so than just "wearing it in HS". i.e. if a guy chose that number in HS as a tribute to a dead grandfather or relative, then by all means....there's more meaning behind wearing the number and wanting it throughout a career. That case, I'd say the school should do what they can to accommodate.

Totally disagree. If podunk high school somewhere gives him the number that shouldnt obligate Clemson in any way. If he wants to honor someone come in a produce then he can have the number for several years.Honoring someone is great. Uppercalssmen who have excelled should get the number they want

I'm w/ you. Take number they hand you & make IT "famous"!

Also, I'm a little curious about the process of retiring #66 when William Perry and also the late Steve Durham (and probably others as well) wore it long after Banks McFadden.

I'm talking more about numbers that are not taken. If an upperclassmen has it already, then yeah, you don't just change his number.

I think Clemson is handling it the correct way, they check with the player who had their jersey retried and if the player is willing they get the recruit to call and ask permission.
It will be interesting the next time that someone wants to wear #4! Likely they will need the permission of Fuller and Watson!

I think suggesting that someone changing their number in the middle their career at Clemson is a non starter.

Glad Anthony Downs didn't get #4 jersey

Jul 26, 2016, 10:52 AM

Didn't Tommy West promise him the jersey as a recruiting tool?

The number 44 has become a legacy at Syracuse, worn over and over by All-American running backs like Jim Brown and Floyd Little. Maybe the #4 or 28 could become the same for Clemson QBs or RBs.

We do have 93 for DE's and we have 13 for well- white boys who can catch.

I thought Ring of Honor member's jerseys were considered

Jul 26, 2016, 7:26 PM

to be retired. Jerseys equal numbers I'm assuming. From the official site: "The Ring of Honor is the highest honor a Clemson student-athlete can receive. A recipient must first be a member of the Clemson Hall of Fame, earn at least an undergraduate degree, and make a significant contribution to the heritage of Tiger athletics. Honorees will have their jersey retired." That means in football 4 (Fuller), 15 (Butler), 31 (Cone), 43 (Kinard), and 45 (Davis) are retired. No. 28's retirement was something Dabo decreed.

Saying this about Spiller "his FASCINATING Clemson career." Come on Mickey...get a better adjective. His career isn't fascinating.....it was SPECTACULAR !

Otherwise a great article !

leaves Clemson. If they want their name on the jersey along with the originials they have to play all four years and get permission from CJ and Steve. I love DW but we're in uncharted waters here and I believe the original #4 and #28 should maintain control over their numbers.

If Dexter Lawrence wanted 66, he'd have 66.

This is apart of recruiting now days.

What irks me the most about Feaster wearing #28, is that I will have to have the CJ #28 painted over on the front fender of my Harley. I had #28 put on bc I thought CJ would be the last to wear #28. I guess I'll replace the #28 with Tiger Paw's!!!
