Please don’t think I’m trying to discount anyone’s opinion on this subject. I have wrestled with sharing about this but feel it’s worth saying. Yes everyday people do have difficulties and they do push through life without saying a word to call attention to their problems so do people who make a kabillion dollars. There’s a horrible stigma attached to mental health issues that extend to folks in every walk of life and people oftentimes choose to remain silent and suffer alone. But here’s what I really want people to know. After working 26 years in the emergency room and now 12 years in a critical care unit, I have learned that a large percentage of people who do take their lives are the ones who never say a word and act like all is well in their world. Then one day a friend or loved one finds them….. they are in complete shock because they never had a clue. Then they live with horrible guilt wondering what they missed.
I am thankful for athletes who are beginning to speak out publicly about mental health problems. They are on a big stage with a huge audience. If one person finds the strength to seek help because they heard someone else speak out about their own struggles, then it’s a win.
I am thankful I’ve never had to walk down that road, but one day I may. I hope if that day ever comes someone will help give me strength and extend grace and understanding to me. And if anyone on this board is experiencing trouble right now, please speak to someone you trust and seek help to find your way back to good health. Sorry this post is so long. Thanks to those who took time to read it.
