Players Getting Paid for Name, Image, Likeness

Oct 30, 2019, 1:54 PM

I love Clemson.  In fact, I'm a "Golden Tiger" having earned my BS in 1969 and my MS in 1971. I've been to hundreds of games- home, away ('Cuse 2 years ago ??), and many bowls including the '81 Natty Orange Bowl.

When I was in college I worked construction work (millwright apprentice, truck driver, brick mason apprentice) every summer and several Christmas breaks to earn money for college.

These life experiences have shaped my view of the question of "player pay."

The current stipend program seems to be working ok. Going beyond this program brings to mind my college work experiences.

If a college student could earn money working construction like I did, what right does the NCAA have to limit a student's ability to earn money today from their name, image or likeness? That's the free market at work. In fact, a former Clemson scholarship football player worked with me in the summer of 1967 at Bowater Paper Mill, which was the best paying job we could find at that time.

I'm sure there will be abuses, but a properly structured program would allow the free market to work and appropriately reward the payers that have earned that right.

Also, given the character of the players we recruit, I think abuses would not be an issue.

I'm sure things have changed since the 60s and the NCAA needs to recognize those changes.

My opinion. Flame away.

Who's gonna make the big bucks is Nikki and under armor. Buy off a California politician and the rest of the country always follow. Poor ol' football players should be able to profit is the excuse, but who will profit is big business, and big colleges.

"I'm sure there will be abuses, but a properly structured program would allow the free market to work and appropriately reward the payers that have earned that right."

The system we have now is BECAUSE there were abuses. There's simply no way to allow players to "work" or otherwise get paid that cannot be exploited by bag men. Work a construction job? Ok, we'll pay you $100K per day, and you just have to show up to punch the time card, then go home. Write a book? I'll take 10,000 copies at $50 apiece for "promotional purposes" (then throw them in a landfill). Here's $500K to be in a commercial for my car dealership...
