Every team in the country runs a wide receiver bubble screen. It is usually run when the D is playing as two high safety and there are two defenders on three receivers. We have run it in the past where Amari has broken it for long yardage and we have run it where we are getting six or eight yards. Many fans don't like it, but it is effective.
This year however, our execution has been dismal, and we are getting one or two yards, tackle for loss, but nothing productive. I think maybe Justin caught one against NC State for six yards. We were not very successful with it against SC State. Just about everybody has run it with some success against us. Are our wide receivers not blocking? Are we calling it at the wrong time? Are our wide receivers not capable of breaking a tackle. Something is wrong. What?

It's obviously our WRs. We have nothing but 6'4 vertical threats that lack elite speed/quickness. Expecting them to be effective in the screen game is delusional. That isn't their game. The staff failed to sign a legitimate playmaker in the short passing game for 3 years. Who is going to be threatened by Ross or Ngata taking a bubble screen 40 yards? Nobody.

Well what I see is it's being telegraphed. I know at least one time DJ made the wrong read. Then the other time you had 3 receivers blocking. I'd put that on DJ because our receivers can read the D too.
Do we break our tendancies on it? I say no because TE runs it when everyone is expecting it.
NC State and uga both have speed. Plus, and I'd say this is the main reason, we really don't have any receivers that have a quick shifty burst on the first step.

You kind of eluded to it, but I do think we are lacking some blocking on those plays. Now that could be due to bad timing or running it against the wrong formations, but it seems like every time we run one, at least one defender is breaking through a blocking wide receiver.

Correct ..... it is not our 5"10" 185 Lb. receivers doing the blocking. It is our 6'3" guys. Of course they are also doing the receiving. Taller guys can run that screen if the blocking is there. Emezie from NC State ran it several times for good yardage. The play is fine if we can execute. It can be one of the options of a RPO, so it really doesn't matter what the defense is in if the QB makes the right read.

There are alot of execution issues. Where I disagree, is our playcalling is SO predictable that other defensives generally know when its coming...so its gets blown up.
Yes, if we executed perfectly we would be 4-0. I just think we are making it way harder on ourselves where a little more innovation can buy you some margin.

Bring back the jet sweep, bring back the crossing pattern, and slants. Exploit the middle of the field! Basically, bring back all of the things that got us to where we were in 2016 with lesser talent. A true slot receiver will revive the offense and calm down QB1.

There were two specific plays on Saturday where Ross completely whiffed on his blocks and the defender was able to blow-up the play in both cases.
Something else I've noticed is that the receivers don't fight for 50/50 balls.

To be honest ..... some balls have not been close enough for a 50/50 chance. In some cases it is because of receiver mistakes. Look .... we are fans and we always over-react ..... both when we are on a roll and when we are in the dumps. Let's take a deep breath, hope that the offense starts to jell some, enjoy the rest of our games, and hope that with a year of experience under our belts we will be able to perform next year.
Maybe Dabo can get the players to relax and just play ball.

Part of the problem is that we run that on 2nd down every time with little to no variation. That leads to the other team knowing that it’s coming and therefore defending it is much easier

5 defensive backs on 4 wide receivers. There’s your problem.
If you go back and watch the game (like all the games this year), DJ hesitates far too long on nearly every pass play. By then, his receivers are covered up. This is what separates Trevor/Deshaun from DJ. They anticipated and put the ball on the money. DJ is unsure but there are receivers open.
