Play Calls On Last Tiger Drive

Nov 6, 2021, 11:57 PM

On Twitter, Elliott said Dabo told him 3 runs and pop one for 1st down or kick a FG. Elliott also suggested that was Dabo's call on the goal line 4th down that failed. Interesting

Dabo took credit for calling the QB run onto the final TD…***

Whoever's call it was, was a bad call. A quick snap where QB goes under center at 250lbs and your backs and TE s fall in behind and scrum like crazy.

and it's always his call to go for it on 4th down

I believe Dabo is doing a lot of the play calling. Whether it’s because TE is over is head with it, or Dabo is wanting to take it on because he knows he can take the heat and cover for TE.

That play calling on that last Tigers drive nearly cost us this game….no excuse for that crappy conservative play calling because this game would have/should have been over with only a first down….field goal did not do us any good right there…..whether it was Tony or Dabo it was horrible play calling right there and we were lucky to win this game because of that crap!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There’s no “whether” to it, you know it was Dabo***

I'm not one to often doubt coaches, but as soon as e got the ball at the 25 or whatever, I KNEW we would run 3 and kick.. and why?
That was frustrating and predictable

Yup! They need to start developing

Nov 7, 2021, 9:33 AM [ in reply to Re: Play Calls On Last Tiger Drive ]

And installing a set of plays for these situations like we do with the 2m Offense. We get way too concerned about how many time outs the other team has and not concerned enough about having a successful set of downs. This staff says “do X and Y will take care of itself” about all kinds of stuff and never here.

Heck, if UL gets 2 more yards on their drive, we will have wanted that time back. So we kind of hurt ourselves. If we’re going to run the clock we need to be confident that our Secondary can handle a scramble drill (they never have been able) before we waste the most valuable thing in a close game.

I’m happy about the win, but the O and D coaching failed to prepare for the end of that game and the players bailed them out.

it pegged earlier: it's called playing not to lose...oft times a sure-fired recipe for failure.

In this case it nearly was, which is why I thought the play-calling sucked hind t*ts on a boar hog.

Don't misconstrue my meaning: I am a passionate Dabo fan. What I am not a fan of is micro-management.

I'm with you hartins. It seems out of character for Dabo and the Tigers not going after a team to put them away. As it turned out, the FG didn't matter anyway. I just didn't expect that coming from T.E. It was like a don't blame me statement.

Dabo says he will fix it and I've got to believe he will.

Maybe he’s tired of people blaming him…

Nov 7, 2021, 12:29 AM

When it’s clear Dabo is overriding several of his play calls.

The field goal mattered because it made Louisville go to a TD. Otherwise they could have tied the game with a FG. Still the play calling at the end was an abomination.

You are correct tigerband1, the field goal did matter. I think I had a brain fart on that statement. TU

have the ball and need a single first down to win. Three plays of questionable planning, punt to ND, and they move down the field for the tie and OT. This year it seems to be the norm with the play of the QB and o-line. We ran a QB power on 3rd and what was it, 13 last night? Not a high percentage chance of converting.

You are right on the money ..... playing not to lose .... which is the reason we almost lost. Way too conservative, especially the way our O-line blocks (or does not block). We just have to be way more creative in the way we run the ball. I am also tired of watching our OL stand around before the play is over while watching other teams OL continuing to push the scrum for another two or three years.

Nov 7, 2021, 12:24 AM

The 4th down call on the goal line is the worst call I’ve seen. A touchdown would’ve tied the score. Would still have to score again to win. No advantage at all to go for it. Take 3 and go. Think of what that 3 pts would’ve meant in the 4th qtr?

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I knew that 4th and goal was Dabo

Nov 7, 2021, 12:27 AM

Anytime you see defensive players coming in to block, it’s Dabo overriding TE

We've been doing that for Dabo's entire tenure

Nov 7, 2021, 12:43 AM

Anytime we have a chance to close out a game on offense we run it up the gut 3x and give the ball back. We did the same thing when we were winning championships.

Re: We've been doing that for Dabo's entire tenure

Nov 7, 2021, 5:11 AM

Now remember everybody back in 2012 before the 4-16 Boyd Nuke connection LSU tried to throw the ball which left time on the board for us and our time outs intact. It was smart to run the ball on that last drive. 9 times out of 10 Louisville would have needed more time to get down the field. This just happened to be the one time. But TE and Dabo made the right call to force L to use their time outs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed-but a first down wins the game.

Nov 7, 2021, 9:48 AM

I think the frustration is with running up the middle 3 times with the same result, not the decision to run.

Re: Play Calls On Last Tiger Drive

Nov 7, 2021, 9:52 AM

Well I could see it from both angles...
My first instinct is it usually pays off to go for the win.. go for keeping the ball.. go for putting the game away with the ball in your hands. Occasionally you have a turnover and it hurts you but the percentages say go for it.
That said...
Our QB had a hurt knee... we had field position... their QB had a hurt ankle... our defense had held them to nothing the entire 4th quarter.
It wasnt a crazy call to play it safe there. I didnt like it, but I at least understood the thinking with all of the circumstances.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The call on 4th down was fine

Nov 7, 2021, 11:26 AM

If we can’t get a yard and a half against a mediocre 4-4 Luavull team, THAT’S ON THE OL!!!! THEY STINK!!!
