Play calling

Nov 7, 2021, 9:36 AM

I don’t understand why we played for a field goal near end of game we score a touchdown and game over

I think TE uses a magic 8 ball to help call plays.

Our coaches have more confidence in Potter than they do our offense to score 6. It wasn't so bad a call, because Potter's almost certain 3 meant that they, late in the game, would have to cross our goal line to beat us. They came close, but our defense prevailed in the end.

There are multiple things that I keep saying every time I watch this offense. Get the backs to the edge more with toss sweeps and swing passes out of the backfield. I’ll like our chances with Shipley one on one with a linebacker trying to over him out of the backfield.

Also did anyone notice that when Ngata went off the field limping on that pass attempt that he didn’t even try for, he ran off the field and no one spoke to him, he then ran over to the trainer Danny Poole and Poole looked like he was yelling at Ngata? It was very quick and when Poole started yelling at him the camera cut away. Not sure what to take from that if anything?

Ngata had started limping a play or two before. He was limping on the straight portion of the route. You can fault him for not taking himself out when he was hurting, but the timing was thrown off to the point that he wasn't close enough to make an effort on the catch.

Get the backs to the edge more

I agree 100%, that up the middle needs some variety.

Or, we call some decent outside plays to get a first down and we run out the clock...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Play calling

Nov 7, 2021, 10:28 AM

Agree on that but I’m speaking to getting the backs to the outside more in every game, not just in that situation last night.

Re: Play calling

Nov 7, 2021, 10:32 AM

Well, we run the ball up the middle on 1st down 85% of the time. But if we don't, we surely will on 2nd down

Then a screen pass to the right.
EVERYONE knows this.

Nov 7, 2021, 3:45 PM [ in reply to Re: Play calling ]

between passes and runs on 1st down.

Most 1st down plays are runs at every level of football, with the idea being make 4+ yards and not be way behind schedule if you have an incomplete pass.

This is the way football works and always has.

Fans are funny. When we run and it doesn't work then there are those who want to pass, and when we pass and its incomplete there are those who say we should run more.

Fans are funny. Always second guessing everything. But do these people ever focus on any other teams? The same thing abounds at every level. Teams most often run on first down and there are dozens of plays every game where the defense stops an offense for minimal gains or lost yardage. The fans of those teams are also saying, "we're so predictable. Why don't we do this, that, or the other"..

At the end of the day, you're not tricking defenses as much as you're just executing at a high level to be successful. Our issue is not devising a new offense to replace the one which has been one of the most consistent in the country since 2015, its about executing the proven offense.

Re: Play calling

Nov 7, 2021, 10:30 AM

Even a simple first down there most likely wins the game.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, a FG earlier in the third quarter wins the game too.

Nov 7, 2021, 5:25 PM

And any sort of defense on Louisville’s last possession kills all the drama at the end.

No real excuse for giving up 73 yards in three plays when the game is on the line and Louisville has no time outs.

Nov 7, 2021, 10:38 AM

Yeah it’s was stupid run 3 times for 3 yards straight into the strength of the D. I have noticed 3 games of other teams lately where they throw on 2nd down and got the yardage game over. I believe at least 3 times this year the Tigers have failed in this situation.
It almost happened last night and eventually it’s going to cost us a game .

Re: Play calling

Nov 7, 2021, 10:40 AM

If we got a first down it is all but over, and we'd have been in the victory formation if it had happened on 3rd down because they couldn't have stopped the clock during the next set of downs.

Re: Play calling

Nov 7, 2021, 10:53 AM

Because they couldn’t punch it in from forth down on the 2 yard line. They should’ve kicked a field goal early in the game instead of going out on fourth down, then the fourth quarter would have had a completely different complexion.

Nov 7, 2021, 5:22 PM

If we go for TD there and fumble or throw a pick, you guys would go nuts.

Coaches made the right call, we won, just enjoy it instead of worrying about how many extra points we could have scored..

What we should be mad about is not being able to get a first down and run the clock out instead of giving the ball back to Louisville and letting that nonsense that happened happen.

so we could win? We played the clock and the situation. We went up by more than a field goal, Lville had to score a touchdown. That is the right play, do not stop the clock with an incomplete pass... make them use all their T/O's...

What no one in the country counted on was two really good plays by Lville on the last drive, essentially two hale mary type of throws with great catches... both were defended.

Their guy gets his foot in by a blade of grass, our guy is out by a blade of grass.... that is how this season has gone...

This is the key to success the coaches just aren’t smart enough to figure out.
