Few things to think about re: Notre Dame

Jul 28, 2021, 1:11 PM

1) As I understand it, automatic bids will go to conference champs only, so even if Notre Dame qualifies as an at large, they will have to play one more game than their likely opponent, if they ever advance.

2) While they may qualify more years than not, as stated above, they will have an extra game to play vs most Power 5 conference champs. Given their history in the CFP, they are not likely to make the final. I wonder what the payouts are for losers of the 5-12 games vs semifinalists and finalists? Surely they won't be the same.

3) If Notre Dame joined the conference with the understanding that any money they earned by virtue of making the CFP would remain theirs (i.e. with no split out to the conference), maybe they would get more interested.

IDK...just some thoughts rolling around in my head. I know there are many smarter minds than me on this board. So let's hear it.

#3 is interesting. As far as their extra playoff game

as a result of never getting a bye, I had hoped that would push them out of independence. Howeveer, their AD, fans and alums have accepted that and justified as "well, all of the other top teams will have to play a conference championship game anyway and we won't so we're even" Also, they figure it will more often than not be a home playoff game for them.

Good point

So if you were Phillips, what would you offer to ND that you think might seal the deal?

Philips knows it's a moot point

ND is not joining a conf in our lifetime (I'll probably die before you, but you get my point.) :)

Time to walk away from ND. Let them do their own thing. They are just like the kid on the playground that brings his own ball. If things don't go their way, they take their ball and go home.

I like your offer in #3. If I were Phillips, I would

definitely consider that. After that, I'm not sure other than promise them we will drop the divisions and stay at 8 conference games and not go to 9 like I think the rest of the nation, even the SEC, might do. But promise ND that we will drop divisions and stay at 8 conference games and that would give them four non-conference games to work with instead of 3.

If ESPN was concerned about inventory at staying at 8 conference games, then add West Virginia and that provides more games for the network to work with.
